Solar flare - Aurorae might be visible from UK

Sun unleashes huge solar flare towards Earth
Quote:
The British Geological Survey (BGS) has issued a geomagnetic storm warning, and says observers might be able to see aurorae from the northern UK.

The monster flare was recorded at 0156 GMT on 15 February and directed at the Earth. According to the US space agency, the source of this activity - sunspot 1158 - is growing rapidly.

It's something I've never seen in the sky with my own eyes, and remains as a plan burning away in the back of my mind to spend a few weeks in a Northern European country get to witness it one day, or should I say night.

For all the many good reasons I love living on the south coast of Britain, I am slightly jealous now if the skies 'up north' are potentially going to be filled with an amazing display from this solar flare!
I guess if the activity continues in this Solar Maximum period I'll just have to jump in the car and head a few hundred miles to have a look Smile

Can you say "road trip"? I would for a chance to witness that.

Well, if an annoying little thing like work didn't get in the way I'd definitely be doing that road trip, but for now it's a case of weekends only. Although the British Geological Survey are reporting that
