Woke up this morning with a sore face and slight swelling. Instantly I knew the signs and my own diagnosis was a growing dental abscess!!
I broke a molar tooth some months ago but as it hasn't hurt much I've been to lazy, or found too many excuses, to get to the dentist to be fixed.
Well, the decision has been made for me today!
Phoned my dentist, absolutely fully booked so I popped to my local health centre instead.
Saw the duty dentist after 10 minutes, had a mouth X-ray, then was issued with antibiotics plus strong painkillers, so hopefully everything will be fine in time for the time off work I'm looking forward to from this weekend.
How much did all this cost me?
Consultation and X-ray with the Dentist - Nothing, paid previously through my taxes.
Antibiotics and painkillers - £7.50 (US£11.54, EUR8.82), If I was poor that would also be 'free' but as I earn over a certain amount I have to make the single standard contribution of £7.50.
It's at times like this I absolutely feel for anyone without access to healthcare as easily and quickly as I have here in my country. I definitely thank my lucky stars that I live where I do, and I wish everyone in the world had the same standards of care available to them.
