One of the girls in the office was away from work today, after her Father suffered a major stroke last night resulting in intensive care with a condition as yet not stable, requiring a brain operation tomorrow.
That said, it looks like she'll be away for a short while at least, but her role is quite integral to some of the things we do (administratively) so someone needed to act as replacement.
I have spent the day learning many new tasks, such as what happens to the plastic wallets of paperwork that I would normally put in her "in tray", plus speaking to people that need speaking to, but with a pseudo-knowledge of what the particular processes were.
Today I truly realised the work she actually does, and if anything it involves more work and multi-tasking than my role does anyday, but for less pay.
I sincerely hope her dad recovers from this event, and when she comes back I'll certainly show a bit more understanding for what she does in a job which I'm glad isn't mine.

I do hope her father will be OK as well. Sounds like you are having an early "boxing" day of sorts. When she does return, tell her how much you appreciate her work.
