When my son started his secondary school I discovered they have an award system of "Commendations" if particularly good work is achieved or produced by the student.
I struck him a deal that for every commendation he gets he'll have £5.00 for each on my payday. They are quite difficult to get so it's a safe(ish) deal - average £15 - £30 per month.
The schools own prize system is pretty lame as well, something like 10 commendations and you get a pen or equally "exciting" prize, so I thought it could be enhanced a little.
He had a detention on Thursday for "being a clown during rugby training", this meant that he had to stay for an extra 2 hours after school to write his reflections of "why we should not be a clown during school hours." Lol
Anyway, when he came home, I wasn't cross with him because fair enough, he'd served his time, so we chatted and I explained that for every detention he gets he'll have £10.00 decucted from his commendation "account" - starting with that one, making him minus £5.00 for this month.
He came home with this the next day (yesterday)...
I was so impressed to see it so soon after an evening of punishment and boring writing, that I felt generous and awarded a double bonus making him £5.00 in credit again
I wonder how many more he'll get before the 28th (payday), or will he blow it in a moment of youthfull sillyness and get a detention?! It's a silly carrot and stick game I know, but it seems to add an extra motivation that I think is worth the price.
