Mariadb is indeed mostly the same as Mysql. Both are open source, and Mariadb began with the code base of Mysql. The original project was forked due to disagreements. By now, I think Mariadb is almost certain to be the one where the most new development takes place, and in the long run you will probably be better off using it for new projects.
I have been using XAMPP for a quite long time. XAMPP replaced MySQL with MariaDB. I was told MariaDB is a drop-in replacement for MySQL. However, I believe there are still some differences between the two. What are the differences? What are some reasons to switch to MariaDB? I have been having some issues whenever tried to put some commands on terminal using a Linux operating system which seems like turns from MySQL directly to Maria DB, does anyone know anything about it?
