One of the notepad replacement software I have been using for quite awhile is NToolz's Notepad pro. It loads quick, has an MDI interface with syntax highlighting, can edit very long files (although I haven't tried it on a mysql database text file) and comes with differently colored icons. I used it in Windows 98 up until Vista. But
NToolz doesn't seem to exist anymore.

I do not whether this helps but I found a download page for Notepad Pro. I had it downloaded. One does not even have to install it. It works from a USB Flash Drive and has a lot of customization options.
It is an excellent Notepad replacement. It also has syntax highlighting for those who would like to write webpages. The download is found here.
