Lol, I know what you mean!
I use coffee in the mornings only, maybe a small cup mid afternoon if I need a little kick but no later.
I usually tire myself out through work and something physical afterwards like kayaking, then there's no insomnia issue, I crash out nicely, ready for the next morning coffee and another day
The following is an infinite sequence:

I used to be a victim of this cycle also. I used to go around and around, sometimes drinking too much coffee, sometimes not enough, sometimes exhausted sometimes wired etc etc. I tried quitting altogether and it didn't work. So I finally got a system: one very large cappuccino in the morning before breakfast, one very large cappuccino after lunch (probably the equivalent of 2-3 espressos in each one). I never have more unless I go out at night, in which case I have another one after dinner (about once a month). This, combined with eating healthy (no junk food, no sugar, no meat) has made it so I always have energy. I am a coffee achiever and it's great.

Thanks for the ideas. Intense exercise at night may not fit so well with my schedule at the moment, but it sounds like a great way to work off all that energy. On the other hand, eating better may be more achievable, although that's actually my immediate challenge to myself. I need to do a better job of controlling random, unnecessary snacking impulses. Unfortunately I'm surrounded by freely available junk food both at the office and at home.
