Can't believe this is still up

I recently acquired a prepaid visa which can act as a credit card and I'm very pleased about it. One of my first purchases is a .xyz domain name, which I got for 1 dollar. I could'nt believe it! But then I didn't want to commit to spending on a hosting server yet, so I tried looking for free hosting websites. That was when I remembered about frihost.

After around 4 years of being inactive, I finally decided to visit this site again. I can't believe that the site is still up! Plus, there are still a lot of active users, some of which I still remember. Over the past years I've grown an interest in making and building things (hardware, this time), and I was able to get my computer engineering degree. I also became interested in startup companies and am currently considering making or joining one. There are just a lot of things I want to do! And I can't decide which one!

I was trying to reminisce about a competition we joined back in high school but was saddened to remember that most of the articles about it were hosted in a free hosting site that is now gone. Other memories of it were made in a blog post from the social media site that closed down as well. It's a good thing to see frihost still alive over these years.

Welcome back! Congratulations on completing your degree, must feel good... though having so many options open to you can be kind of frustrating in itself Wink

Welcome back Lightwate. Am curious. Were you able to access your hosting account at Frihost when you returned?

Aww, thanks everyone!! Very Happy

@deanhills: Yes, I was able to access my hosting account. Although I can't seem to connect to the FTP via FileZilla. It gets stuck in "retrieving directory listing". But it's probably not a frihost issue since i can connect to it via windows explorer.

You're lucky then Lightwate. We don't have any support for Servers 2, 3 and 4. I reckon you must be on Server 4? Servers 2 and 3 were moved from Frihost's previous Data Center in US to Germany in mid-2014. Some of the very old Frihost accounts (2005-2006) got completely stuck in between the two data centers, i.e. they were set up with old 65.* IPs that weren't relocated with the move. Result was that those hosting account owners were unable to log into their DirectAdmin accounts. And regrettably no Bondings available to fix those as he is the only person with access to the servers. One of the old 2005-2006 member accounts reported in the Webhosting Support Forum that he could access his Website by FTP but at least three others who reported to the Webhosting Support Forum said they were unable to access their hosting accounts. They could see their Websites, but were unable to make any modifications.

Why I'm writing this is just to warn you to be extra careful with how you access your hosting account as there is no support if you are unable to access it. DirectAdmin can be unforgiving at times and block you when you try to login too many times. When that happens use a proxy. And if you do have your original login information, make sure you use the exact right login info. Don't take unnecessary chances. Most of all, make backups and save those to the hard disk of your computer or a flash disk. You may not get a second chance if something drastic should happen to the content of the servers.

Oh, I didn't know about that Sad Thanks for the heads up! I just finished backing up my files.

Whatever happened to Bondings though?

That's a multi-billion dollar question! Razz

I suspect that Bondings has the servers in a semi-managed mode at a very reliable data center in Germany resulting in incredible up time. Up time for Server 1 is 346 days! If you check the history of the servers in Bonding's blog for the last three years, you'll appreciate how miraculous that is. But also the irony of it all. There is hardly any activity in the servers. No account creators around, but also not much in "quality posts" to justify new accounts being opened. Not sure where all of the quality posters have disappeared to, probably got their own VPSs or cheap hosting. Much easier to use something like PayPal to open a 3US$ a month shared hosting account with great specs, than to post for a hosting account. In the meanwhile I'm happy, as I feel I have the best free hosting EVER and the Forum is still alive!

VPS's are getting cheaper and cheaper, nowadays you can get a decent VPS for 20 p/m which isn't that bad. there are cheaper ones but you get what you pay for eg: no support.

@Marcuzzo. I tried out my first free VPS last December. Learned a few Linux codes. Was an interesting exercise. The VPS I have though only has 512 RAM and it's very easy to exhaust it. I used Apache for OS and WEBUZO for a Panel. I tried out a great number of "free" panels, but some of them were just too slow on the limited RAM or came with security problems or bugs. I got the paid version of WEBUZO which is 25US$ per annum which compared with cPanel at US$200 felt like a great deal. At least compared with the free Panels, WEBUZO comes with regular security updates. WEBUZO is really softaculous and the paid version comes with all of the softaculous scripts. Thought I could afford that and wow, I'd better check when I have to renew it. Must be soon.

Anyway, I think I prefer good quality shared hosting on a reliable server. VPS is probably more for serious web developers and my needs are much more basic. Fun to play with a VPS though and get to grips with Linux commands and SSH. Razz
