Got my xiaomi phone!

I got it around 3 weeks ago, and I tell you - it's worth the wait.

A bit of a background, Xiaomi is a startup smartphone company aimed to rival apple's influence in China. They were the ones who developed the MIUI rom if I am not mistaken. The main advantage of buying a xiaomi phone is that you can buy one for just ~300$, almost half(?) of the iphone's price. And this is not your ordinary china phone, mind you. The disadvantage? they only ship within China.

With the price so low, LOTS of people wanted one, and that included me. And being a start up company, Xiaomi quickly ran out of stock, selling ~300k units in just 2 days. This happened in October 2011. I waited, reading reviews and stuff, trying to decide. Finally, I asked someone from China to send me one.

It took 4 months. And again, I tell you, it's worth the wait. The phone, called M1 (short for mi-one) has a 1.5GHz dual core cpu, 1Gb ram, 4 inch display, and runs on the MIUI, a mod of android (2.3.5). I compared it with my friend's SGS II and I find almost everything (except the camera) is better in the xiaomi phone (for my preference). I especially liked the screen better because it doesn't give a blue or red tint when tilted (as with my friends Nexus S). The SGS II did better in rendering games though, because it has a dedicated GPU. But we can play muffin knight in multiplayer just fine.

Then again, All these positive things may be because of the MIUI rom, which made everything so seamless. It's pre loaded with the tools you'll definitely need. The theme selection thing is great! there are a lot of user submitted themes and you can download them from built in 'app' and you can apply only certain parts of the theme (ie, the lockscreen or wallpaper). MIUI is also based on cyanogenmod, which is probably why everything runs so smooth.

The MIUI team is also very industrious, releasing a stable new version every friday. I just upgraded to the latest version right now, and it's literally just a few clicks. The phone has a built in dual partitioning system, so you can just let the phone upgrade the other partition while you're still using the phone. And when you restart it, viola! And if the new one doesn't work for you, just revert to the old one by selecting it and rebooting it again.

That phone has very great specs and is of the high-end lebel. I wish I have one too. But for now, I'm pretty much contented in my Cyanogenmod7 powered because it still rocks. Congratulations on your new phone. Smile

I also have Xiaomi. Bought 3 months ago here in the Philppines. It's a great phone actually. What I like on this phone is the auto-update software feature so you don't need to go to a site to look for software updates. Thou, I'm planning to sell this phone very soon..
