Power electronics is the area of electronics that deals with the processing power to obtain higher efficiency (lower losses in energy conversion processes) and quality (clean energy in terms of environmental impact). The methods employed in power electronics are based on the use of semiconductor devices operated in the switching system to perform power flow control and conversion of waveforms of voltages and currents between sources and loads.
The components used in the power electronics are usually operated only mode switching (on/off), usually optimized for this type of operation. Most of them should not be used in linear operation mode.
The appearance of the Power Electronics has provided an attractive alternative for the processing power due to low power loss in switching coupled with low maintenance of semiconductor switches.
