Well for a while now I've been getting heaps and heaps of spam every day, so much so that it made up probably about 80% of emails. Because I have a slow dialup connection, this is a real problem.
I decided to try out an idea that I'd been thinking of for a while: Forwarding all my email to a gmail account then just download emails from there, sans spam (courtesy of gmail's terrific spam filtering capabilites). I tried that.... and it worked!
However while reading up on this topic some people suggested that Google might think the spam was coming from my domain, since I was forwarding it from there. So I decided to drop the forwarding and use gmail to collect the email from my account automatically, via its POP settings.
So I was doing that for a few hours but then Google Apps caught my attention. Basically what it does is that you change the MX (mail server) records for your domain, so that they point to Google. Then I still have an address like firstname.lastname@example.org, but it actually goes to a gmail account.
I've just set the MX records up but they haven't propogated yet so I have to wait a day or too.
I'll probably let you know how I go. The advantage of setting up me email this way is that I won't have two separate accounts (email that comes with Frihost and gmail), and all the email will be stored on gmail's server, which means I get more space on my server .
Tell me what you think of this idea, please.
