I recently bought a Canon Powershot A720 off eBay. Once I'd had it for a few days I decided to look on Google for A720 and found out that a very exciting bit of firmware going by the name of CHDK exists. If you look at the features page, you can see how many capabilities it adds to your camera. I was really excited to learn that it allowed me to take photos in the RAW format, which as any keen photographer will know, is the holy grail of photographic formats.
The CHDK firmware works on many Canon cameras (see here), so if you own a Canon and want to really add some power to it why don't you head on over and see how to install CHDK!
BTW CHDK is technically not firmware as it can never be installed permanently. It resides on the memory card so it can't damage the camera in any way. if you have any doubt, see this response by Canon.
