This blog is an experiment to see if I'm going to use it or not. I suppose this description is temporary too...

Something fun to do on a local network in Personal with 2 comments on Sun May 03, 2009 2:02 pm
With my new wireless network setup between the router, my macbook and the emac, I've been experimenting with all the cool stuff that's now possible.

One of the most useful services IMO is called Bonjour, which is integrate in many mac apps like iTunes, iChat, iPhoto, etc. With iChat I can do video, voice and text chats between each computer, as well as screen sharing.

I really enjoy the freedom wireless gives as well. If inside the house is really noisy and I need to do an audio or video chat, I can just go outside, walk around and still be connected to the net.
New Wireless Network in Internet with 0 comments on Sat May 02, 2009 1:10 pm
About 4 weeks or so ago I ordered a wireless router/access point from a local shop called Leading Edge Electronics here in Yeppoon. They get most of their products from a large supplier called Jaycar (http://www.jaycar.com.au), which also has a chain of stores in the USA.

Anyway the router I bought (Jaycar Info page) had no brand name in the description or anything, so I tried to find out who the manufacturer was. I got lucky after seeing the brand name 'Tenda' on another of the wireless products Jaycar sells.

Plugging Tenda into Google turned up tenda.cn, which is one of the largest manufacturers of wireless networking equipment in China, according to the description of the company. If that's true I'd expect that their products would be reasonable quality, so hopefully my new wireless router won't be giving any trouble. Jaycar does put a 1 year warranty on the product though so that should cover any problems.
Work at Almost Anything in Personal with 0 comments on Sat May 02, 2009 12:35 pm
I've been working just about all last week at a web & graphic design studio in Rockhampton (about 40kms away from us) helping them catch up with all the work they've been getting. The 'recession' isn't affecting them in the least I don't think.

It's really cool working in a proper web design studio, everyone's nice and I get to use a really big dual-monitor setup (although running Windows Vista unfortunately - would've preferred to use the best OS in the world - Mac OS Leopard Razz

Since Rocky is a fair way away from our place I have to catch the bus in most days, never had the need to use public transport before so the novelty hasn't quite worn off yet. Waiting for the bus if it's late gets annoying pretty fast though...

I also redesigned my local web design business website, you can see it at http://www.briterwebdesign.com. I know the background image is a huge file size, but it's the basis of the design so I can't really do anything about it. IE6 users will miss out on most of the effects.

Another few little design changes were made to yeppooninfo.com, had to redo the navigation so that I could add more pages easily. Also I added a forum to the site.

If you have any comments on either of those sites, I'd love to hear them Smile.

I'm currently doing a university course through Open Universities Australia right now, the first assignment is due in a couple of days so trying to get it finished off. The course itself covers a lot of web design stuff I already know, the hardest part is the research requirement where I have to write 1500 words of comprehensively referenced material for a website.

Well I've been away from Frihost Forums for a while, decided to check up today and was a bit scared to see I'm -23 points. I always tend to get behind, then visit after a while and have a few wild days of posting to get my points back up again. Rinse and repeat.

Anyway seems like there's been a few cool changes on the Frihost search features, great work Bondings on that Smile.

I've had a few exciting things happen in my life, first of all I turned 16 in the middle of March, now I can get my L plates (which is like a beginner's driving license). I also bought myself a new computer, its a late 2006 white Macbook from Apple, with a 2Ghz Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB of ram, and an 80GB hard-drive. I need to do something about the hard-drive, its a little too small for me.

The macbook is a huge improvement over my eMac, for a start it's an Intel processor so I can do all that cool stuff with windows virtualization software Smile.
