Just recently, I installed a lite version of Raspbian Jessie through Berryboot. I decided to install XFCE on it and see how things were going. When customizing the panel I see a plug-in called Generic Monitor.
The plugin looks like this:
But the good thing about this is that you can add some scripts to display for example time or wifi signal strength.
# A simple script for displaying time.
echo "<txt><span fgcolor=\"yellow\" weight=\"bold\">"$(date "+%H:%M:%S %p")"</span></txt>"
Save this code anywhere in your path, in my case I save it in /usr/local/bin and it can be run anywhere just make sure you make your script executable. Afterwards, select the generic monitor in the panel and right click on it and select properties. And then a configuration window will pop up and there you will place your script.
