WASH program in WASH with 0 comments on Sun Feb 24, 2008 12:24 pm
WASH Program is Water, Sanitation and Hygine Promotion program

The global objective of water and sanitation programmes is to guarantee access to water and sanitation that essential to survival and socio-economic development.
In many program of WASH, the main concerns are sanitary risk an in these cases the objective is specifically focused on the reduction of diseases related to water and poor sanitary conditions

This objective can involve three aspect
1. Covering the minimum requirements necessary for life
necessary to meet the minimum needs for survival i.e minimum access to water and vital sanitation structures

2. Reducing the risk of the spread of water, sanitation and hygiene-related deseases
3. Guaranteeing access to water as a necessary resource for food security and social-economic development
Hygine Promotion in WASH with 0 comments on Sun Feb 24, 2008 12:09 pm
What do you know about hygiene promotion? Ask anyone who has been part of the
water supply, sanitation and health conference circuit in recent years and you will
probably hear something like:
• Changing hygiene behaviour is crucial for healthier lives and to gain the full
benefit of water and sanitation improvements;
• Hygiene promotion should be the first element of an integrated programme to
bring improved water and sanitation, not a marginal add-on to a technical
project;
• Handwashing with soap can reduce the number of diarrhoea episodes by 35%;
• There are not enough hygiene professionals around

A big global advocacy campaign called WASH will raise the profile of hygiene
promotion and improved sanitation as political priorities.

Effective hygiene promotion reduces the main risky hygiene practices and conditions for
women, children and men. It does so in a measurable way, to a significant level, in a
pre-set period and within available resources.

Black and Grey-Water

Domestic wastewater is described as 'black'-water that came from toilet and 'grey'-water that came from bathroom and kitchen. Grey-water, which is 80% produced by domestic wastewater, contains many pathogens and polllutant and should receive adequate treatment just like black-water.

All waste-water must be processed before it is disposed. All wastewater must go to a septic tank followed by soak pit or leach-field. The septic tank is used primarily for black water.

To avoid ground-water contamination due to black-water infiltration, the minimal distance of septic tank and absorption from the source of clean water is 10 meter and the septic tank need to be construct with waterproof septic tank (do not allow leaking of septic tank that can be infiltrate into the gound).

Water is Vital
All life depends on water, which is the main component of living cells
A day without water is sufficient for the brain to become unable to work properly (obsessed by the lack of water) and one can die in 2 or 3 days without water
Human living standard depends on water availability

Dirty water is lethal
Dirty water is the cause of more than half of the known diseases
• Water-borne diseases represent the category of illness caused by drinking water contaminated
• Water-washed diseases are illness developed in conditions where freshwater is scarce and sanitation is poor
• Water-based diseases are caused by aquatic organisms that spend part of their life cycle in the water and another part as parasites of animals
• Water-related vector diseases are infections that are transmitted by vectors—insects or other animals capable of transmitting an infection
