Facebook buying Opera?

There seems to be no limit to fb's ambitiion as it announces or leaks plans for a mobile manufacturing business. Now they also want a browser of their own. That is a cool way to grow out, but the question remains is it essential and will it possibly help?

There is still no concrete proof that anything is really going on. But, over the past week, we have seen multiple sources claim that something might be up. In my opinion, the deal does make sense for Facebook. It will allow it to both gain eyeballs in the mobile segment, and also better monetize it. However, I am not convinced that it’s in Opera’s best interests to allow itself to be gobbled up by folks for whom browser is not really a priority. Facebook might increase Opera’s reach, but it might also stagnate Opera’s development, hamper its innovative edge, and tarnish its reputation and trust.

This all seems very very exciting and may usher in more competition in the mobile segment. We already have ms's baby trying to make a mark there. Lets add to the chaos!

First, FaceBook should clear up all issues with the farse IPO before they go spending money they may not have.

Would be cool if thy got into the manufacturing business. I would be really interested in seeig what they come up with.

I really hope they go their own way though, there was talk of modifying an existing OS for a cell phone. It would be way better if they came up with something on their own in my opinion.

Though I guess the reason is they need to boost revenue quickly and creating a whole new phone would take a bit of time.

Will be interesting to see how all this plays out.
