The significance of no staff at Frihost

This is probably going to sound a little depressing. But right now for me there is more significance in seeing Ankhanu, Bikerman and Ghostrider around than wondering whether Bondings is going to ever return to Frihost again. For the simple fact that the only Frihost opinion that is valued and has always been valued is that of staff, whether they are active or not. Since there doesn't seem to be any intention of appointing new staff, it would make sense to me that if staff were asked about the future of Frihost, absentee staff would either not comment or if they did, be disassociated enough from Frihost Forum to suggest that Frihost should be mothballed.

Only thing that could probably save us is the fact that Bondings is known for being a procrastinator. And may not read any suggestions that are made to him. But if he should wake up one day, and read those suggestions, I'd take a good guess that he'd go with the staff "majority rule". Whether they are active or not will be irrelevant. In his mind's eye the absentee staff may still be active and their opinion as relevant as they were at the time when he left Frihost. Non-staff opinion is and has been perfectly irrelevant from the beginning of time.

In the end Frihost may die not because of lack of active members, but lack of active staff. Hence why I'm triply grateful Ankhanu is still around. And why I value Ghostrider's visits and hope that Bikerman will return one day. Thanks for being around Ankhanu! Apart from being one of the greatest Mod's we've had at Frihost and a super quality poster, I'm almost certain you're rooting for us in the Staff Forum. Thanks for being around. And thanks to Ghostrider for still visiting us. Here's hoping Bikerman will return as well.

Thanks, dean.
Life isn't giving me much chance to actually participate in the forum very often, but I am here at least once a day, often more than that, to moderate. I'm not saying a lot, but I am around Wink

I know where you're coming from; we haven't heard much/anything in some time from the top, which is worrying. But, like you mentioned, Bondings has a tendency to disappear and show up just in the nick of time to pull off some necessary action to keep Frih going... Will that happen here? We just don't know.
My inclination is to keep going on the assumption that things will work out. I'm a fairly pessimistic fella most of the time, but for some reason I figure we should have some optimism. The way I see it, a free web host is a temporary thing, developers using a free web host should be prepared for their host to disappear at any given moment, and keep appropriate backups, there's no real reason to not continue offering the service until it happens to go away. If Frih continues on, great. If it ends up folding, well, it had a good run.

This is sort of the perspective I've taken any time I've felt "why am I bothering to moderate this". We might not have much from the top right now, but, the community is worth the work.

nice commentary, Dean. Also let me add my deepest thanks to Ankhanu for taking time with this forum. I am hopefully that the others Mods and even Bondings will visit soon.

Well, I am glad that one of the staff members replied to your blog post. Yeah, Frihost seems a little off the beat since there are no admins who are actively here serving the member base. But this on is an old site and I assume that the ones who started it and who run it are well quite bored with it or busy with something else, that they don't have time to participate in the forums. But since, Frihost (the forums) is up as well as our hosted sites are still running, and we're not getting any Good Bye forever messages, we can say that there are still people who are out there, paying the server bills and maintaining the uptime of the main site as well as member hosted sites.

Frihost feels like a site in limbo,it's always going to be here, but it's never going to go anywhere.

I get the point about no staff, but with so few posts, there is very little to moderate anyway.

I stopped coming here for a while; and one reason was that I never got a response to my application for free hosting. I thought that I met all of the requirements. I realize it's free, but I waited a long time. I tried another free host but I had some issues with them. I wasn't able to easily update my Word Press version, for example. When I contacted support it took them weeks to reply. So in the end, I decided to pay for hosting, even though it will probably be a while before I make any money. The experience of learning Word Press is probably worth the $10 a month or so.

I must disagree. We still have plenty of 'bots' and spammers the Mods (Ankhanu) have to deal with.

Yeah, I haven't had to police genuine posters much in the past couple months... which is great. That said, I remove a lot of spam and have to move/lock topics from time to time Smile
