Sleep Deprivation causes "dirty" brain

Found this interesting article waiting for me in my e-mail box at work. WOW! If sleep deprivation causes a "dirty" brain, mine has to be black. lol ..... interesting that my brain cells are shrinking during sleep by 60%. All these interesting health factoids going around .... putting stress on people who can't sleep, and creating another reason for staying awake. Worrying about not sleeping. Darn! Looks as though this can be a precursor to Alzheimers as well. Gotta do something about my sleep deprivation.

Sleep is deeply interconnected with your health in a myriad of ways. For example, previous research has found that sleep deprivation has the same effect on your immune system as physical stress or illness

Recent research shows that your brain has a unique waste management system, similar to the lymphatic system in your body. This system, dubbed the glymphatic system, is activated during sleep.

By pumping cerebral spinal fluid through your brain’s tissues, the glymphatic system flushes the waste from your brain back into your body’s circulatory system and into your liver, where it’s ultimately eliminated.

During sleep, your brain cells also shrink by about 60 percent, which allows for more efficient waste removal.

Amyloid-beta, for example—proteins that form the notorious plaque found in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients—is removed in significantly greater quantities during sleep

I haven't been too bad about sleeping for a little while now. I used to go through spells where I was just having issues getting to sleep for a good week, then I'd get out of that and carry on normally for a couple months before it hit again. Having a cat sure has changed some of this! She wakes me up so I never sleep in so I'm awake for longer. I also found that lounging in bed a couple hours before I mean to sleep, and just throw on a tv show on my iPad helps me wind down (for those weeks where I have to be up at 5am). Any other day and I'm good just going to bed before midnight.

So does this mean I have a healthy brain? I still feel like there's crap up there since my memory has always been pretty terrible.
