Vancouver, BC

So all the arrangements have been made. In a matter of four days. First got the ticket, then the leave, and then finally booked some accommodation last night. I'm off to Vancouver, BC on 27 July. The in journey goes from Dubai via Amsterdam (huge transfer time of 7 hours) to Vancouver, and the return journey Vancouver via Minneapolis, Paris in France to Dubai. Both journeys are about 24 hours. The ticket was cheap, as the return flight has three stops. Most of the cheap tickets with KLM/Air France/Delta have multi-stops, but I tried to arrange it so that I didn't have to stop in the US en route to Vancouver. I reckoned it would be more of a challenge from a US customs delay point of view to arrive in the US from the Middle East. Flying from Canada on a Canadian passport through the US on my return journey would hopefully be a better deal.

Vancouver is a somewhat expensive city, so probably more expensive than I'd bargained for accommodation wise. Hopefully all of it will be worth it! I'm planning to do some shopping at the spots I know for things I can't find here like decent shoes. Also to spend maximum number of hours out in the fresh air, weather rain or sunshine, and hopefully quite a large number of those hours in Stanley Park. Now that everything has been booked, am quite excited about the trip.

What, you did not want to swing into Chicago so I could say "Hi!' I am hurt - j/k. Have fun on your trip and stay out of US airspace. laugh

Hope things go well for you in Vancouver. Be careful with the money, sometimes things add up faster than one realizes. Hope you enjoy your accommodations. Have a safe flight.

Thanks Pauline. You're right about being careful with money, particularly in Vancouver where the cost of living is sky high.

Getting quite excited. Four more sleeps and off I go. Lots to do still before I go however.

1. Pack binoculars ... tick
2. Charge camera ... tick
3. Load laptop .... tick
4. Pack Motorola mobile phone I purchased last year in Canada ... tick

Seems like you are packed and ready to go. Might want to double check though. Hope it goes smoothly. Are you riding on the wing of the plane? I don't think that is allowed... nor safe.

You would ride on the wing of the plane. Also, safe trip and take lots of pictures! You said you charged your camera so you have no excuses!

Thanks Pauline and TG. I'm just about ready. A few more hours to go and my journey begins.

Have fun, Dean. Take your blankie to wrap up in on that wing! Only gets to around -40F at altitude.

You're right. It was FREEZING cold! Razz

Am at Schiphol Airport now trying to kill 7 hours transfer time. In last two hours thank goodness, and was able to stretch out and snooze on and off for the first two hours. Am availing myself of horribly expensive WIFI courtesy of Schiphol Airport. VERY happy I've got my laptop with me. Found a very sparsely populated area of the wing I'm in and enjoying it very much! Rest of airport being VERY busy. Like Grand Central Station. Think I'm now more or less in good shape for the next leg of the trip to Vancouver. 10 hours flight. Yuck! The last one from Dubai to Amsterdam was 7 hours. Felt longer than that. Leg space was not too bad however. Survived a jam packed flight.

I always found sleeping on the plane made the trip go by much faster. When I was in high school we went on a band trip to New Orleans. It was 2 flights down and 2 flights back. I was awake for the first flight, it was about 3 hours long. The second one was bumpy at the beginning, more so than the rest. That was another 3 hour flight and I eventually fell asleep and woke up just before we were going to land. The 2 flights back were the same. Go on, moved through the turbulence, fell asleep and woke up just before landing. I was home in no time!

I wish I could sleep on a plane. Never been able to do that. I may dose off and on during really severe exhaustion. But that's about it.
