An exhilarating departure ...

Where I live, we rarely get fog, but this morning was a very exhilarating and interesting experience. Right inside the compound visibility was great, so was totally bowled over when the taxi got to the outside of the compound and we had the thickest fog I've ever experienced. Coupled with the fact that it was still dark at 5:00 a.m. it looked completely like scenes out of a horror movie, although the feeling I had was more of wonder, suspense and magic. We only had a few metres visibility ahead of us for the better part of the journey to the border post, and the 20 minute journey turned into almost 45 minutes in the end. The most challenging portions of the journey were traversing the large number of round abouts on the way. Not really being able to see the exits until we were almost right on them.

I usually get dropped off at the border post, and then make my way on foot to the Omani side. So when I exited, everything was shrouded in fog. No taxis, so decided to foot it to the Bus Stop that was probably about 35 minutes brisk walk. Everything looked unrecognizable, as couldn't see the other side of the road, as well as only a few metres ahead of me. And there were three round abouts en route. Felt both awesome and surreal at the same time. What an amazing experience for the day!

Thankfully by 7:00 a.m. the fog was lifting and the bus driver took off slap bang on the alotted hour. Was just thinking that the Germans would have been in total admiration for the stickler to departure time of Oman Transport Services. Right down to the short staccato honks of the bus driver. Arrival was also slap bang on time at the destination point in Muscat. Awesome! I'm impressed!

Sounds like quite the adventure already. I've always found the fog to be rather interesting. Of course I'm not usually up early enough to see it anymore and right now it's too cold for fog. What would be cool is if I was in one of the tall apartment buildings downtown and I made the special effort to check for fog. It would look so cool to see it from up high!

Also, I like bus drivers that leave and arrive on time. The worst is when you see all these other buses leave on time and you're still waiting for yours to show up!

Hope you're having a good time and I hope the weather is nice and you get the opportunity to take some interesting pictures and meet some new people!

I hate driving in fog. You never know when another vehicle will appear stopped in front of you. Slow going or find a safe place to get off the road until fog lifts.
Interesting way to start your trip. Let us hope the reminder is 'clear sailing'.

Hope your trip is just as exhilarating in its own way as its beginning. Take care on your trip.

Thanks Pauline. Been pretty awesome yesterday spending last night browsing shops for special deals. Today was a fantastic day. The weather is unbelievable, so was out hiking for most of the day mostly walking much further than I've ever had before on the corniche (beach road). It's siesta time here right now, so am catching up on posts.

So far so good Stand. Am returning tomorrow at lunch time, so hopefully all will be according to schedule as back to work on Sunday.

Agreed TG. Am sure if one was on top of a building it would look pretty awesome. Where I was however most of the buildings are average two stories. As well as where I live is pretty much flat country. Very rarely that one sees a hill. In Oman however there are some fantastic mountains, and could see some of the fog lifting from the mountains. Not as interesting though as earlier on when it was dark and mysterious. Must say I'm really having a great time so far. Pretty awesome to be around here.

Thanks Pauline. Just returned a couple of hours ago. Wish I could have stayed longer, had a terrific time and the weather couldn't have been better. Bus trip back was also pretty awesome. Dead beat! Tomorrow's back at work (Sunday is the first day of the work week in the UAE), but if I can find time, I'll check through the photos I've taken.
