Am having a relaxing day today, however interesting at the same time. The hotel room I'm in has a perfect view of the whole of the Pacific Ocean that surrounds Manta. And I was lucky that I brought my binoculars with me. Amazing bird life over here.
The first birds I noticed were the Brown Pelicans. There has to be several colonies of them around. They fly almost in single file very low over the water.
Yesterday included some fantastic sights down the Pacific coast travel to Puerto López on the way to the venue of the Whale sight see trip. Here is a sight of Pelicans being perfectly relaxed, waiting for some small fish to come their way:
AMERICAN BLACK VULTURES
And then there were GREAT numbers of Black Vultures around as well. In fact, my first sight of the Black Vultures has been en route to the Pacific Coast from Guayaquil to Bahia. There two Black Vultures posed for me at Puerto López. Can just imagine what they must have been thinking of this Gringo - their facial expressions just about says it all:
Equally abundant have been thefrigate bird, however very difficult to photograph them because of the limitations of my small camera. Been amazing to see them diving into water for fish, like some kind of avian dive bomber. There were hundreds of those in Puerto López as well:
Other birds I've seen around (will update this periodically):
Manta - Great Egret
Quite a number of waders - Semipalmated Sandpiper
Manta - Pacific Golden Plover (but as a wader in the shore right in front of the hotel)
Manta - Sand Martin Swallow
Inland in Rice paddies - Black-Necked Stilts

At least it looks like you are having a good time. No whales but at least you have the birds to keep you company -) Hope you have a good time of the rest of it.

Thanks Pauline. I had a great time there. Hope to return there in the next few years to do the Galapagos islands. Probably guaranteed to see the whales there, provided I travel during August/September.
