Flying weekend to Bangkok

I'm usually quite conservative in my lifestyle. I'm not thrifty, but neither a spendthrift. However, over the last month have started to develop a bad dose of cabin fever in the UAE. So decided to do something radical like a flying visit to Bangkok, just for the weekend! There is no detailed planning, except for a cheap flight in and out of Bangkok International Airport, and staying in a Hotel close to the Airport. I did that, as the Hotel has limitless free shuttles to the Airport, and the Airport is bound to be connected with cheap transportation to different parts of Bangkok.

I've always avoided Bangkok like the plague. Usually just transferring through to other cities of Thailand. So this will really be my first visit so to speak. Major objective however is to get out of the box and do something really completely crazy so that I can recalibrate my mental paradigms. Very Happy

I've always wanted to go to Thailand too. Although mostly for the nature/beaches and maybe a bit of the old (religious or not) buildings and towers. I guess visiting a city can be quite interesting too.

I think if you are interested in buildings, probably the Northern parts, Chang Mai would be the right place to go to, and the Golden Triangle. Bangkok I expect to be very commercial, and I've always tried to stay away from Bangkok. But it will be interesting to see how wrong my views may have been. Good test will also be whether I can find an Internet Cafe for doing a few posts. I found a great place in Koh Samui during the summer. It was a place that specialized in games, so there were these young Thai kids and you can't believe how excited they could get with the games. Was fun just hearing them in the background. Very Happy

I'm actually not to keen about Asia, every time I think about Asia, especially the more South-East regions and India, I think of total Mayhem. Little streets, people crossing streets without even watching or blinking, motorscooters everywhere, little houses made of corrugated sheets, families living on 4m^2, etc.

On the other hand when I think of Asia (again more South-East), I think of the infinite rice fields, agriculture, peace and total calmness.

*5 minutes later*

I think, I remember where I got those views from South-East Asia.

Dean, if you're doing Thailand for just a weekend I'd say either fly straight to an island and chill there, or Krabi if you can, then use the town as a base for a couple of days exploring on a rented scooter. Amazing beaches along with many many cheap boat trips to snorkel in some mindblowingingly beautiful reefs, and if you like Geology then you've got an outstanding 40 million yr old fossil beach plus Karst landscape everywhere and even the evil overlords island featured in the James Bond movie The Man with the Golden Gun

If on the other hand you just want a crazy weekend, I'd suggest fly straight to Bangkok, catch a taxi to Khaosan Road, stay in dirt cheap backpacker accommodation, visit a load of temples nearby in the day by Tuk-Tuk, then party your head off in the evening - not forgetting some lovely street cooked Pad-Thai of course!

Whatever you decide, I hope you have a brilliant time...even if I am a little jealous! Laughing Smile
