Passing of a Virtual Member of Family

Max's passing jolted me. And it was quite a revelation to me when it did. Here I am, posting anonymously, and assuming when one posts anonymously, that one will not get involved with any of the other characters who are posting anonymously too. And then when the passing of Max was announced, it completely jolted me. First I did not want to believe it, and then when it finally penetrated, actually felt sad. And now I wonder whether this anonymity actually connects people closer than when we are not postingly anonymously. As when one posts anonymously, one usually writes more freely, perhaps even more aggressively, honestly and openly than otherwise. So connection probably happens more easily when one is open, than when one is reserved.

I also discovered that I recalled almost all of the posts Max had made and the threads he had started. I remember every few months or so he would start a thread along the lines of: "I'm back". By the second one that got me smiling. But there were also more serious threads that he started, like the skydiving one that elicited some really good discussion. I am really sorry we won't see any of his scriblings again. Hope he has gone to a better place, perhaps a Frihost Heaven. Angel

I understand what you mean by Max's passing. Saddens me as well. His posting will be missed.

I don't think much about my post being anonymous even though I have a 'screen name'. I have many friendships that developed over the internet and with ability to Skype become better friends.

I totally understand what you mean with

I too sometimes say things online or on forums that are much harder to explain face to face or with people that you have known for a long time. I think a quote of Oscar Wilde is in its place here, written long before there were computers or internet:

Quote:
Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth.

And indeed Max will be missed by many Frihosters, including myself as I have talked to him a few times on the IRC, yet that is some time ago... Sad

Thanks for the feedback. I really enjoyed receiving them. Very Happy

On a side note, tonight when I was posting I could not help but notice some of Max's stickies. If I had not known he had passed, he had left so much of himself behind in his contributions in the Forums that one would have been able to survive on those "as Max being around" for quite a length of time. I probably would have thought that he was very busy and working very hard in the Frihost background with helping new Frihosters.
