A new year. What an illusory concept, a figment of the human imagination, based on the ever-changing relationship between the sun and earth. OK, I know I sound like I'm in an 8th-grade science class, but it's taken me some decades to understand the motion on which the Gregorian calendar is based. And as its beginning year is based on a human, it makes the concept seem right puny.
2012 exists only in our human minds. Without us, it ceases to exist. So arbitrary is the specific year, for the Earth's orbid has no beginning or end, no starting or finish lines except for on our puny calendar, no matter which one you follow. And as our species makes up .00000000001% of Earth--one planet, orbiting one star of the billions in the Milkt Way, one gallaxy of an estimated 100 billion in the universe--the "new year" is a tiny event indeed.

Very well said. Just another day in the life of this planet. I think 'new year' is just an excuse to party excessively. Got to run, the party is starting! laugh
