OK, I am back from my snowshoe hiking trip.
As planned we stayed at the Krimmler Tauernhaus in the HoheTauern and did 4 hikes from there. The Krimmler Tauernhaus is located somewhere in the middle of the Krimmler Achen Valley and one thing I especially enjoyed during that week was that the entire valley as well as the house we stayed in was just for us. Nobody else ( except a small group of hikers on Thursday ) made it into the valley in these days. No internet, no TV, no crowds, no cars … what a great way to relax from the hectic world we all have been coming from.
Even this years winter has been quiet poor so far we were lucky enough to get some snow two weeks before and starting at an altitude of 1630 m we had the opportunity to hike into some other valleys and up to an ice lake, reaching an altitude of 2400 m. Most tours didn't go as planned: there was actually too much deep snow to advance quickly. Our mountain guide quickly got exhausted and we had to exchange the person going first in the group every 15 minutes to craft the trail into the snow for others to follow.
Thus we did not reach most of our planned destinations, but who cares: main purpose was to hike through a wonderful snowy landscape, not to reach any destination. Our longest trip took us more than 8 hours from 8:00 in the morning to 4:30 pm before we got back to out house.
Weather was quiet nice and thus we enjoyed our time in this lonely valley, surrounded by white mountains, coming home exhausted in the evening, having a good meal and some drinks and going to bed quiet early. I found it a great way to relax !
My photo set about that trip is here on flickr.
