It is amazing to read here that in Europe since 70 years the amount of forest is growing. Nevertheless, that growth is slowing down: from 700.000 ha before 2005 to just 500.000 ha nowadays per year.
370 million tons CO2 have been absorbed by these forests in 1995.
Nevertheless, meanwhile Forest are also getting older and thus more vulnerable. Wood fires are a big problem in southern Europe. And overall forest seems to absorb less and less CO2.
The latest bild der wissenschaft magazine showed a chart of CO2 in/decrease in 2012: while Europe and US are doing a good job ( -50 and -200 million tons ) the world overall as well as China, Japan, Middle East and India increased CO2 emissions by 400, 300, 75, 50 and 50 tons respecitively.
