How much we know ...

I have been on snowshoe-hiking vacation for the past 2 weeks. We stayed in a beautiful hotel in the Wildschönau in Austria, not far away from Kufstein. Photos, from the awesome trip and hikes we made can be found in my flickr account.

The hotel publishs a little morning news papaer every day and one day they had a nice quote in there I like to share here:

"Only a few know how much you need to know to know how less you know"

From the "Fliegende Blätter", a humorous-satiric magazine, published in Munich between 1845 and 1944.

This is, really, part of the joy of science as a pursuit; the recognition of our ignorance as we plunge deeper into knowledge. I've yet to meet a scientist who doesn't recognize that the more we know, the more we realize we don't know, even the most arrogant I've met recognize this humility (of course, then there's the drive to discover what we don't know, but that's something else Wink ). From my experience, there aren't a lot of other fields where this sort of concept is practically institutionalized.

Looks like a lovely place for snowshoeing. Hope the whole trip was lovely!

Thanks for commenting, folks.
Yes, we have had wonderful hikes, especially four hikes high up into the mountains for which we hired an Austrian mountain guide - especially to not run into any avalanches - have been incredible !
