Cleaning, backing-up,...

A lot of things are going on lately on the back-end of my Frihost Webhost. The website has been down since July 2009, so that's more than a year ago, but I've been actively using my webhost even after the website went offline. Currently I'm checking every directory to see what is still in them and if I find something useless (like .zip files made from backing-up directories), I delete it or if I see that I have something twice on my webhost. I'm also renaming the directories to make everything SUPER organized. I've also found some old stuff, like a blog of mine that was active for like 3 days, but that's history now I deleted it. Razz

I'm also deleting the MySQL databases and users if I don't use them anymore (I had like 14 users and 8 databases Razz ). I'm also going to check the emailpart of my webhost later on, to see if I had any emailaddresses that I don't use...

So hopefully everything will be clean as a whistle when I'm done with my webhost. Smile Maybe a question for the readers of my blog (if there are any ofcourse Razz ): Do you use your webhost? Have you ever cleaned it? When was the last time you organized things on your webhost? Are you organized in real life and does your webhost resemble your real life (messy in real life = messy on your webhost?) ?

Probably should give some answers to the questions that I did not yet have answered
Well it's my first clean-up since I asked for a reset (I think that was February 2010) and my webhost does reflect my real life. I tend to organize things from time to time (like my desk,...) and after using it for a while, it's all cluttered (not for me though, I know were I put everything but it looks like a mess for other people (piles of papers, books,...)) and I reorganize it, so I can start the cycle all over Razz

Would be a great time to set yourself up a website. Maybe not another blog, since you seem to enjoy using your frihost blog. But perhaps a personal portfolio for yourself would be a good idea. especially with the new projects you're getting.

I suppose it would actually be a good idea to post your blog posts on your personal portfolio as well. Let me know of you need a portfolio design - i can of course hook you up.

As for the questions, i dont really use my web host anymore. There is a very old backup of my website on it. Which answers if i clean it out, which is a no. My website has moved onto a paid hosting service.

Yeah, I should make a website for myself once... But it's always harder to make one for yourself than for someone else. I always want to put all my knowledge in it but that's quite impossible and makes the website look cluttered. But I was actually planning to have a website by the end of this year but I'm not really sure what I should make of the website. (Just portfolio, also blog (about webdev., like my frihost blog,...), one page design, multiple pages, dutch, english, with or without personal information, also a place for school (like resumés,...) ...) The choices I have to make are endless ( Razz ) so it could take some while before I have the concept of my new website finished...

Adri that really made me smile, I'm pretty much the same!
I have a silly saying "tidy house, tidy mind" and when everything is a bit messy in my head I'll tidy the house, or my hard drive, or server space, and get everything in order which helps the disorder thats in my head sometimes!

Excellent post, good to know my own "digital sorting things out therapy" isn't that unusual Smile

To answer your question, adri.
Yes, I do use my web host and I do a fairly good job of keeping it clean and organized. Real life pretty much the same. If fact, I just backed up my hard drive onto a spare hard drive again. That way if the one fails, I just put the spare into service and not lose too much information or time.

Any sign in getting your personal website up? I'd like to see what you can come up with.

And of course I would contribute in any way I can. Smile
