Fish Tales

So I went to PetSmart with my sister because I needed pig food. I went in and ended up buying pig food, as well as a bag of seed, fruit and vegetable mix, and a bag of hay. Then I went a bought two more cat toys, one in the spirit of Christmas, as well as a Christmas like jester collar with bells and a reindeer head thing. Mynx doesn't mind the jester collar that much but I can't really get the hat to stay on.

I also ended up with a Fish...

My sister mentioned that she got a fish because our nephew wanted one, now she's got a goldfish on her desk and her cats, specifically Thomas, go nuts for it. So now I will introduce you to...

Sir Charles Winston Finneus!

And here's a video of Mynx and my betta...

So far Mynx hasn't tried to knock the tank off the desk. I ended up getting rid of my second monitor since I don't do that much on my computer that requires the extra screen space anymore. It also makes good for Mynx so she can sit up here and look at Sir Finneus or just lay down next to me.

Sir Finneus is having a pretty good time swimming around and he hides in his ship when not a whole lot is happening. The morning after I got him I checked to see if he was swimming around and I found him parked in the ship. If I had the space it'd be nice to learn more about having and maintaining an aquarium, complete with plants and different kinds of fish. They look so cool!

I see a love affair developing between Sir Finneus and Mynx. That YouTube show is GREAT! Love the way you put your fish tank together. Looks as though it's turning into a toy for Mynx. Very entertaining.

Delightful Smile
Quick question, is your tank heated? A lot of people don't heat bowls/tanks for betta, and they will do alright... but they'll be a bit listless and lazy. They come from the Thailand, Vietnam, Laos area and are adapted to fairly warm water, and are happier with the heat... even warmer than a lot of other tropical fish, preferring 25-30 (generally you'd keep a tropical tank around 22).

A cat, 2 pigs and a fish. Busy house. Just add a bird and a dog.
I liked the video. I will translate what Mynx is saying to Charles. One of these days, I must have you for lunch!

remember this?

Oh looking at those again makes me jealous! Probably when I get a bigger place I'd like to invest some time in doing up a really nice aquarium setup with real plants, some other fish. I did get these guys...

Mr Bubbles, Sir Swims and Lady Coral. Unfortunately Mr Bubbles when on a murdering spree and killed Lady Coral and then Sir Swims. Stupid Mr Bubbles. Everyone I know kept saying that betta's aren't supposed to be with other fish, but Sir Finneus doesn't care about them! He's too busy flaring up at his own reflection on the side of the aquarium (I got a bigger one, 5.5 gallons, but its still smaller than what I'd like to have).

Since I have that bigger tank and just the two fish I might get some more items for the fish to swim in and around. Sir Finneus loves hiding out in the ship!

Also, this is what I meant when I said Sir Finneus was flaring up at himself...

You can't see it as well as I'd like but his gill things are puffed out and his fins are all expanded to make him look more intimidating. I think when he was doing this I put my hand up against the glass so he couldn't see himself. He calmed down and then I took my hand away. He looked at the glass, looked aware and then did a "wait a minute!". His mouth opened up wide for a second and he flared right up again. He was startled! Funniest thing I've seen from a fish!

Strange that your tetra killed the others... they're a shoaling fish and are most comfortable in groups.

Betta are fine with other fish, for the most part. They can be aggressive towards male guppies, or similar, as they can look enough like a betta to trigger aggression... but more often, they're the target of other more aggressive fish, as they're so showy and slow. That said, most docile community fish will live harmoniously with a betta.

Any suggestions for another fish I could get that's small and is super friendly?
TheGremlyn on Wed Nov 27, 2013 2:09 pm
The size of your tank will limit what you can put in there, and will eliminate several problem species right off the bat.
.: Pretty much any tetras will be fine.
.: Avoid guppies, as the Betta may be aggressive towards them.
.: Semi-aggressive fish like barbs will destroy the betta's fins, likely killing it.
.: Small catfish will generally be fine; corydoras, for example will be no problem at all.
.: Ottocinclus algae eaters will be functional, kinda cute, and pleasant.
.: Platys, while I don't care for them, would likely be fine, as will others of the livebearers that aren't guppy-showy.

Don't put too many fish in there, though; you can maybe keep 10 small fish in there... and that will be a little crowded, probably.

So when are you going to burstMr. Bubbles?
I had 3 goldfish for awhile but they decided to go to school and I have not seen them since. laugh

I'd probably only get one other fish. I don't want to many but I'd like to see 3 or 4 fish there. I certainly don't want them to feel crowded. As for Mr. Bubbles, I'm watching him. If I think he's doing anything to hurt Sir Finneus he's cut. He's going in another tank (or little bowl).

Could do a small gourami, like a dwarf or honey... they're a good size, but not too big for the tank and betta... and, could add a female betta or two!
Ankhanu on Thu Nov 28, 2013 2:31 am
Darn! I missed the new additions, two of which are no more. Mr. Bubbles the killer fish .... and so tiny as well. Think instead of a new tank he would make a nice treat for Mynx. Twisted Evil

A female Betta?? I don't want babies! Eek!

Update to the fish situation:

I got another fish! A... fancy female guppy? It's little. I think that's what it was called...... Anyways, she's still alive! So she is called The Baroness!

She's in the upper right. Not overly colourful but she's not bad. She's a fast swimmer so when Sir Finneus feels like charging about she just zips away!

I also got a cave thing and I found Sir Finneus in it one morning. I wanted him to use that a bit more than the ship since I don't want him getting stuck and dying. You can also see I bought a sunken ship background. I sort of tried to stick with a theme. Anyways, I have to go poke out the plant that found its way into the cave. I left those in the tank (they came in the cup with my betta) since I think they're cool and they float about harmlessly and they haven't died yet!

Very creative. Great background. Sir Finneus must love the variety as well.
