Balcony Madness!

So I moved into this place in March and that's when they closed the balconies so do the necessary repairs and places the railings with something nicer. Well, I've had my balcony for a week now. So let the photo reel begin!

We finally have a balcony and we can show off our awesome patio set!

Mynx isn't entirely sure she likes this 'Balcony' thing. If anything... She looks a little pissed off... But she's so cute sitting there in her chair!

Probably the next day she's checking it out when it's a bit lighter out. Giving the finishing of the cement a good sniff before even touching it with her delicate cat paws.

We have touchdown!

Ok, we did regress a little. I tried leaving the door open so she could choose whether or not she would come out on her own... Well that was a fail and having your tail sticking outside does not count!!!

There's a gorgeous girl! This is why I think I'd be better off in animal photography! I love taking pictures of animals and getting up close and catching those looks! Oh yea... she's sitting on top of the table again... Siiiigh.

Alright. So as I mentioned I've had this balcony open for about a week. Well last night Mynx and I spent most of the night sitting out on the balcony by candle light and listening to Michael Buble (it's been a while since I listen to him). Well, it was pretty nice. The temperate stopped being ridiculous so I had a hot coffee and I was wrapped in a blanket. I was out there till about 11:30PM and then I went to a friends house and wandered back at 2AM. I passed out and woke up to my cat alarm at 8AM. I tossed good in her bowl and walked over to the balcony and threw the main door open and stuck my right foot out. Then my left foot and then I saw this...

All manner of curses spewed from my mouth at this. I can totally see where the centre or this wonderful mosaic started. What I can't understand is how the flip this happened!!! This is tempered glass and is almost a centimeter thick! I called my superintendent and then when the main office opened I called them. Some time later 3 guys showed up to look at it and they were shocked. I heard them talk about whether someone threw a stone up at it or hit it with a pellet gun. Then when they were about to leave the head guy said that it looked like it had been hit from the inside.

He walked back out to show me and how he thought it looked like it was bowing outwards ever so slightly. Well, duh! I understand how that works! But I didn't do it!!! I just got it after waiting for sooooo long and this happens and they're kind of implying I broke it... Well I wasn't happy with that and a little after they left I called the main office and said I was not comfortable with the implications. Well they put me on hold and then they came back to tell me that these balconies are new and they need to wait for the 'glass people' to come and have a look at it. I had suggested if someone didn't throw something at it from below then it must be a defective panel. I mean, maybe it wasn't installed properly and there was a weakness somewhere in the glass and ... it just cracked. In either case, the superintendent stopped by with some other guy and they taped it up. So for those who couldn't tell there was anything wrong when they looked up, well they sure can now with the tape!

Well, the company that installed the balconies didn't come out today so hopefully tomorrow. In the meantime I was hanging out with Mynx and I did sweep the balcony off so that we could sit out here tonight.

I've just had a string of bad luck this year. Just one thing after another and I just need things to flip around. I guess it isn't all bad as I've made a number of connections and friendships. If I look at the positive I've still got a good place I'm living in, I've really made it into a home and I have a great cat that loves me enough to bite my ankles in the morning! It's just amazing the number of people who genuinely care for me and what happens to me and how helpful they're being. Makes me feel all warm in fuzzy inside.

Now I'm going to refill my mug with more raspberry passion fruit green tea and chill out to Michael Buble and cuddle a Mynx.

Looks like something mashed on it. Can't imagine how it happened unless you are visited by a flying super hero .. (maybe a secret admire Razz)

I don't think it's was stroke by anything.
The crack center is too small, and it still looks smooth on the surface.

Did you buy the Nickle-free tempered glass?
There are 3 of 1000 tempered glass with NiS will spontaneous break.

You could refer to this wiki topic about tempered glass spontaneous breakage.
This topic lists a few possible reasons.

@dude_xyx: I like the sounds of a secret admirer that happens to be a super hero! Razz

@rx9876: It is very smooth on the surface but I'm not sure what kind of panels they are. That one in particular sits right in front of where my table is so if it was damaged I would have seen it. I hope it's not an issue with the frame because then I'd risk having another panel break on me, wouldn't I? As for temperatures, we've had several days of really hot weather (32 degrees C feels like 40 something, etc). Then after it rained the temperatures dropped and that night in particular it may have gone down to the single digits. When I was sitting outside it probably got down to 11 degrees C. But since that means the glass would have contracted away from the frame... I don't know. Maybe it could be that nickle breakage. Whatever did it, it was quick and I didn't hear anything.

The photos are fantastic. I love the close-ups.

What rotten luck with the glass. I'm inclined to agree with you. It must be the way they put it together. Hopefully it can be fixed as maybe it's still under warranty.

I'm a little worried about that space in between the balcony glass wall and the patio floor. Is it big enough for Mynx to get through? Is that maybe why you've got her on a leash? Looks as though there is also a gap between the wall and where the glass railing starts?
deanhills on Tue Jul 23, 2013 6:49 pm
@deanhills: The gap on the sides is less than 2 inches. The gap from the floor of the balcony to the bottom of the railing is... maybe 3 inches... 3.5? I think her backup is a little big to get under it but who knows when self preservation might fly out the window? I have her on a leash for my peace of mind and it would be nice if she got used to the harness (which she mostly is) and a leash (this may not actually happen). If I'm on the balcony during the day she may sniff around more. During the evening last night she actually jumped up on the other chair and we sat there for a couple hours. Previous times I would put her in the other chair myself.

Side note, I'm probably going to be reducing Mynx's food portions by half since it looks like her belly is getting a little bigger. I don't want a fat cat but I don't want a skinny cat. I want a cat that is juuuuust right for cuddling Smile

great photos of the Mynx! Nice patio set. You think she saw a bird and tried to jump through the panel to get it?
Seriously, New glass, new frame in new concrete, to easy for everything to be still settling. You would be surprised how much things move with little temperature change. I would say improper installation. Watch if possible when they remove the panel. It should have a foam gasket all the way around it. Especially the corners. This allows for expansion. Cheap way is silicone caulk in place of gasket.

@standready: I did have a look at them and it looks like they have some kind of rubber at the edges that the metal frame grips. I can feel it on most of the panels but I can see it on the panels on either side of the balcony. May not have cheated out there.

This was cute! I guess Eve and Co are not allowed on the balcony? Very Happy

Ha! Yea, I could see Squee being on the balcony and then something startles her and she waddles her way off the edge of the balcony, assuming she can fit! I could sit out on the balcony with one or the other in my lap. Eve and Squee might like the fresh air and sun. It'll be nice once I get some tubs (not sure what else to call them but JYSK has some nice wooden ones) and plan some flowers and other edible plants, maybe some grass for the piggies! That might happen next year since it's getting a little late in the season?

Some flowers and greens would brighten up things a bit indeed, and some potted tomatoes and herbs as well? Maybe you could put a creeper over the mosaic glass panel? Razz

Glad to that they installed with gasket. Maybe you can block off the bottom so Squee &Eve can run

Thursday is over... my balcony is still broken... the red tape is getting a little old now... it's not so bad a night. During the day it just sucks to look at!
TheGremlyn on Fri Jul 26, 2013 4:11 am
You want fixed - put a large sign over the panel stating "broken glass and panel provided and installed by _____" A little embarrassment and bad publicity might just get it fixed. Especially if you email a picture to the installer.
standready on Sat Jul 27, 2013 11:16 pm
Have they fixed the glass panel yet?
standready on Wed Jul 31, 2013 4:31 am
They're supposed to be coming today, (less than a hour!) to fix it. Not sure how many people are going to be traipsing through my apartment :S
TheGremlyn on Wed Jul 31, 2013 2:17 pm
Good luck if they show up. Tell those people to behave or you will turn the mop (Eve) loose on them.
