Is Reading a Requirement?

Today was a pretty uneventful day at the Help Desk. It's a Friday and it's the last day of school before reading break. Hardly anyone is around and there aren't any classes on a Friday. Phones are pretty much dead too.

I was on the desk for a while by myself when Will, the guy between Instructional Tech and the Help Desk comes up. I get a ticket where a girl is having issues logging into their email and saying it's asking them to sign up for Gmail. She indicates the email program she's using is Netmail....

So many things wrong with this!

First of all, she's a full-time student so she doesn't have Netmail anymore. Second, she's already set up with a Gmail account because we switched over and made a deal that all student accounts would be hosted on Google severs and use the Gmail interface.

I tell her to call the Help Desk so we can do a remote session so I can see what's going on. Some hours later she calls in. I start up a remote session with LogMeIn123 Rescue and I find myself in a MacBook. Yay!

I take control and go to the login screen for the student portal, it logs her in automatically. I click on Email and then My Inbox and her school Gmail account loads and I hear this:

"WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT!!?!?!? NO WAY THAT JUST LOADED!!! I'VE BEEN TRYING THIS ALL DAY AND IT WOULDN'T LET ME IN!!!!"

Meanwhile I'm almost laughing, and she kind of is too. Then she says to me that she's not crazy and she took a screen shot of what she was getting.

I looked over the screenshot and I saw that her browser had her logged in under her hotmail address. When she tried to load up the school Gmail account is registered her browser wasn't a Gmail address. So it proceeded to ask her is she wanted to convert her account to a Gmail account. She could say no or she could make sure she was logged out of the Hotmail account.

I've seen a similar issue where someone is logged into Chrome with their Gmail account and when they try to access their school Gmail account it says they're already logged in to a Gmail account. He couldn't figure out what was going on. I just signed him out of his other Gmail account so I could get his school email to load.

It just makes me wonder... What are the requirements for getting into University these days? Razz

As someone who's had 10.5 years of university and post-graduate education, and experience working as a TA, I can safely say that the requirements for getting into university are: 1) money and 2) a willingness to hand over said money to the university.

It's the little things in life, isn't it?? Wink

Yep, Ankhanu nailed it! Money! and if the university is really lucky, person fails and has to give them more money to try again.
