My Mom was in a Car Accident Today

I was near the end of my lunch (really only about 20 to 30 minutes ago) when my sister texted me saying my mom had been in a car accident. Some person in a truck hit her and she got spun around. She was just on her way home and she was hit near Winners. My sister says she's okay and it's the car that's in rough shape.

I have to admit I'm a little more upset about this then I thought I would be. At first I was okay, just asking my sister questions. When I just started crying, I'm still kind of crying. The roads are terrible right now and I'm always afraid of losing my mom because of some idiot driver. I mean, if it was bad and she was in the hospital or worse my sister would have called me.

My mom is fine, but it feels like such a close call. And it probably doesn't help that I'm already stressed about a billion other things. I'd called my mom earlier today to let her know I would stay in town since the roads were probably going to be gross. It would be dark out when she'd have to come pick me up after work when I got to the terminal.

I think even if the roads were find I wouldn't ask her to come get me. She's probably pretty rattled. Needs time to settle down...

I am glad to hear that your Mom is OK. Things, like cars, can be fixed or replaced.

She got back to me and said that her knee is a little sore and her chest is sore from the seat belt. It was a head-on collision with a truck that had it's right turning signal on, but they never turned and ran right into her; she was trying to turn left onto the road so they should have been able to turn together since it was a 4 lane road.

Both airbags went off but didn't hit her but that means the car is written off. My parents are down to one vehicle that, to be honest, really sucks! No power to it at all. I guess I might be spending a few days in town until things settle? I was planning on staying in town because I didn't trust the roads with all the snow and mild temperatures.

Poor Mynx is going to go crazy! I hope someone remembers to feed my pigs... Lil' Squee is a fatty and needs her half scoop. Eve clearly knows how to eat like a lady and can make her full bowl last a week!

Glad to hear that your mom is mostly okay, that could have been disastrous. I am sure someone will look after the little tikes for you.

Car accidents are never great. One thinks one is OK because one only has a scratch here and there but the impact significantly jolts the whole system and it is that part that one should really take care off. Also sometimes it feels as though one is OK and the real problems only start to manifest well after the accident has taken place. A thorough check-up at the doctors would not be a bad idea, particularly if there is insurance involved. And then to get some sedatives and plenty of rest for at least a week I'd say.

My mom is doing a lot better. The swelling in her right hand seems to have vanished finally, she just has some bruising there. I never did see her knee but it looks like she's walking on it a bit better. She seems to be in higher spirits but she still seems nervous at the wheel.

This is what the car looks like...

Looks like it could have been a very serious accident. Glad to hear that she is still improving. Hope se gets back to what she was like before the accident.

Glad to hear your mom doing better, L. Are they going to consider the car 'totaled'?
standready on Wed Feb 06, 2013 10:43 pm
Yea, the car was totalled. Both air bags went off at the front. Not to mention So much money and time would have to go into repairing the front end and making sure the frame for the rest of the car wasn't messed up by the accident. The insurance company gave my parents $1200 for the car. They have their mechanic looking at auctions to see if there's anything there they like since he's a licensed dealer.

Glad to hear Your mom is well now.

Really very bad crash.
Do you think $1200 is enough for the repair?
Because i don't know about the car well.

That car is seriously messed up. Lucky damage hadn't gone farther which might had seriously injured your mom. Gonna need more than 1200 USD to get back into shape, I think.

They aren't fixing the car. I think it's cheaper for them to get another used car. I can't imagine how much work would have to go into fixing/replacing the whole front end. Replacing the engine is expensive enough. Cars are so expensive!!
