The Premier of The Jay Leno Show aired last night (09/15/09). The show started off odd because of the new or altered-to-unfamiliar theme song and then the lack of studio announcer John Melendez. I know the show wants to be "fresh" but the beginning was alienating.
Leno's entrance to the stage reminded me more of a game show than a late night talk show. I am a big fan of Jay and his mostly harmless humor and Leno's monologue was very familiar and lighthearted which is what I was looking for. The segment with Jerry Seinfeld was perfect with a satellite-fed appearance of Oprah being interviewed by Jerry who had the juice to get Oprah to appear after Leno - as the skit goes - failed to book her.
The mock interview with President Obama was funny and the very real interview with Kanye West was uncomfortable. The musical performance of Rihanna, West and Jay-Z was fine and the future musical numbers on the show look like it will be a strong point of the show.
The Headlines part of the show brought me back to the familiar comfort zone that helped make the Tonight Show a success.
In conclusion : The Jay Leno Show is "Watchable". I'll probably watch it two or three times a week depending on the guests, the musical guests and whats on CBS or ABC.
Rating: Watchable .
