Song in my Head The theme from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
Quote: "Use what talents you possess - the woods would be silent if no birds sang except those who sang the best." -Dr. Henry Van Dyke.
I write this on a borrowed Dell laptop with a crack accross the screen, In a three-generation hand-me-down armchair, with a very contented Maine Coon cat on my lap. The sun is shining silver through the clouds, then through the window, and I can hear the sea breezes pushing through the trees. The clock is ticking in the background; An airplane flies overhead. I've just sat down from taking a homemade Riccota Cherry Cheesecake out of the oven. To top it all off I'm dressed in my favorite night-sky blue long-sleeved t-shirt with the stripe and baige cargo pants... I describe this scene, not because it has anything to do with anything, but because it just struck me how perfect things are, just in this moment. Mom is resting, Dad has the kids in the woods, shooting things with his sling-shot, (Not animals; there's a stop sign at the end of the trail that's a favorite target, maybe trees...) The house is perfectly quiet minus the breathing of the cat and the ticking of the clock... And the heater turning on and off... and the fridge doing the same... and the cars on the highway... and the neighbor's loud music... alright, so it's nearly perfectly quiet. But it's a happy moment of solitude, the kind I treasure...
....For about three hours anyway, then I start getting lonely. They'll all be back sooner than that though. Until then, I'll enjoy the quiet. After that, I'll enjoy the chaos...
....Here's the youngest now, loudly heralding the end of the solstice.
