This is my first free game review.
I want to do some free game reviews for PC, but I haven't found any that I like enough to review, mostly because my PC is very slow, so it limits the gaming capability. Once I fix that, you will be seeing more reviews for Free (or cheap) PC games as well.
I noticed that "Shoot Many Robots" was free if you have Xbox Live Gold, So I downloaded it and tried it out yesterday.
It's a side-scrolling arcade type shooter. If you've ever played the arcade game "Metal Slug" the graphics remind me of that game somewhat. The graphics also remind me of Borderlands, except that it's not 3D, of course.
All you do in the game is shoot robots, so it could easily get boring; the robots are rather repetitive, but I still enjoyed it for several hours yesterday. In fact, I plan on playing it some more today. I think one reason it is fun is you actually have an RPG element to the game. Your character get nuts from blowing up robots, which can be used to purchase weapons and other gear in the shop. He also levels up from experience.
Another thing that might stop the game from quickly getting boring is that you can play with up to 3 of your friends. I've only tried this on one game. If you decide to try out the game my gamer tag is SpaceInvader75. Feel free to invite me.
The game has a sense of humor in it that I like, even though there's basically no dialogue. The gear you purchase for your character is often pretty creative. There's a gnome rocket launcher, among other things. There's also something called "Fluffy's revenge" that looks like a pet carrier, but I haven't bought that one yet.
You carry 2 weapons with you in the game. Your primary weapon, which has unlimited ammo, and a heavier weapon with limited ammo. You can refill ammo and health (which comes in the form of beer lol) with crates you get sometimes from blowing up robots. You can also regenerate health slowly, but it does not fully regenerate. In addition to your 2 weapons, you can also use a melee attack, and (if equipped on gear) a slam attack from the air.
So, overall I like the game. It's fun to shoot hordes of robots, even though it may get old relatively fast, at least you can level up your character and try different weapons. It's probably worth a try if you like arcade style games. One advantage is that it only takes about 500mb of space on your hard drive, so if you're like me and you have a small hard drive, that's a plus. The controls are a little bit awkward as well, but it wasn't too big of a deal for me.
I don't know if I can give it an accurate number rating (1-10) because I haven't played any other games like it on the Xbox yet, but it's the first arcade style game I've played, except for "Marvel Ultimate Alliance", which is a little different. I suppose if "Marvel Ultimate Alliance" is a 10 then "Shoot Many Robots" might only be a 7, but at least it's free (if you have xbox gold).
I plan on trying out at least one more free xbox 360 game this week, so there should be another review soon. I was looking at some videos of "Happy Wars" and that one looks promising.
