Settling Down

I know I should be buying a house but I'm not certain where I want to be. I've been to many states but leaving the U.S. is looking better and better. That's a whole other ball of wax...

I've always been of a mind to do what I want, live how I want, live and let live. The realization of getting older is setting in and settling keeps coming to mind. It's not something I don't desire. Just not right now. What really bothers me is seeing people I grew up with. They never left the neighborhood and most have lives as depicted in the theme song from "Weeds".
"Little Boxes"

And the people in the houses
All went to the university,
Where they were put in boxes
And they came out all the same,
And there's doctors and lawyers,
And business executives,
And they're all made out of ticky tacky
And they all look just the same.

What really gets my goat is listening to the complaints about their lives. I'm not heartless but I remind them that these were their own choices and it's never too late to change. From my perspective, you learn more, do better, move on. If you're not progressing in some way, you're regressing because time isn't waiting for you. Time is a thief and life is so brief.

I don't want to live in a house made of ticky-tacky. I'd be happy in a yurt if I had electricity and hot water. The more I look at my life, I feel accomplished and I don't even own a car or my own home. I guess there is no need to fix what isn't broken.

You should check out Ecuador if you feel this way. Crime rate is a bit high, but on the whole a good alternative if you want to invest in a property. Cuenca in the mountains seems to have a thriving expat community with plenty of properties available. As well as experiences that have been shared in blogs. When I visited Ecuador my personal favourite was Manta on the Pacific Coast and up the coast from Manta there seems to be properties available as well.

That sounds cool but the crime rate will probably land me in jail for fighting back. I have little tolerance for crime and I'm tired of having to be cautious. As I get older, I want to be able to relax more. I've already had enough adventure in my life then most people will ever see.

Another option is to look after people's houses who are on vacation or extended leave of absence. So you get to move around all of the time.
