getting from -225 points to 0 again

I've been away for a while and mostly because the topics that interested me the most, mostly tech-related topics because I'm not that big of a fan of regular chit chat unless it's BS for fun, were drying up or filled with stupid topics like 'which programming language is best' or 'what is java script' ( note the space ).

I digress, my absence has dropped my once topping at 45 points count to -225.

I remember a day when there wasn't a single time when I would log on in which I didn't have a topic to reply to.
I joined almost 8 years ago, dear god, time flies, I used to be 27 at the time, I wasn't even married back then and my beautiful son wasn't even born, and Frihost was averaging at a whopping 8000 posts per month.
in 2014 it had already dropped to less then 500.

the reason(s)? not sure, I've had a chat about this specific question with Dean and he's (..was since the chat was a long time ago) not too sure either.

I've tried, god knows I've tried to stay away from frihost, I mean, I don't need the hosting, yet I've been logging in lately from time to time to check up on a couple of users here that I've grown fond of over the (almost) last decade.

it's sad to see that the forum has almost dried out and that it no longer is what it used to be.

Here are a few things that come to mind as to why the forums are drying out:

with that being said, I will try to be active again as much as I can and hopefully I can make a difference.

and you surely can Wink

Hi Marcuzzo. I love your post! And it's great having you here. You wouldn't believe it, but anything from Marcuzzo I love to read and I'm sure I'm not the only one. Particularly in the technical forums I've learned so much from you.

You also feel like family of Frihost. Particularly with time marching on. Wow, it's getting to be a long LONG time!

First of all, you can apply in the Accounts section of your account for your points to be reset, and if you do, I'll be the first one to reset it for you. I realize you were mentioning the points more as an indication of not being regular, but I'd love to help you get your points down and start fresh. That was one of the first things I did when I got the power to do it. Reset all those who asked for a reset. I'm hoping it caused an e-mail to be sent to them and they'll be reminded of Frihost. Very Happy

I agree with you that Frihost needs a makeover, Frihost particularly needs to be made mobile friendly, but I don't think that is going to happen soon as none of the staff have root access. I always argue with myself at the end of the day that the easiest thing for Bondings would have been to give up on Frihost as most other free web hosts of the 2005/2006 time era have done. Instead what he has done is to keep paying the bills and let it take care of itself. Rather than mothball it. I much prefer him doing that as he obviously has no time to give it a makeover. Also, he probably wants to keep it so he can recognize it as Frihost. Razz He also said that he preferred to do all changes himself as that is why he created Frihost. To learn to do everything associated with building a Website and creating a community.

Space wise we're in a similar dilemma. Bondings hasn't been looking after new accounts, but he has been looking after current accounts space wise (not support wise). He did move the servers to a much more secure data center from US to Germany. And I get a sense that the hosting is semi-managed for big security issues. Our hosting is in a very secure environment.

One of the big reasons tidruG made me staff was so we can open new hosting accounts on Server 1. So in essence we're ready to open accounts again. And I'm hoping we can advertise that in some way so we can get people to return to Frihost. I don't think we'll ever be blooming as we used to before, but I'd love for our Forum to stay alive, and for that to happen I agree with you. We need to be able to offer free reliable hosting. I think we can.

Hi Marcuzzo! I also look forward to your post especially in the technical. I agree with your assessment but also understand that people have moved away forums (in general) in favor of Facebook and Twitter. Request the points reset, you have certainly earned.

@ Dean:
Congrats on your appointment. I am sure your participation in admin of Frihost will boost the community.

Hi standready,
People have indeed moved on to other 'social' media, but if you look at the reasons why it becomes obvious.

Forums have been around for a long time and in essence, it's a place where people can talk about topics that interest them and where you've got interaction with other users.

Twitter is a place where people post messages, facebook does the same thing but has extra features like uploading photo's and have friends but in the end it's all the same.

it may be a coincidence but both platforms have a mobile app, so people no longer have to start up their laptop or desktop and can post messages when sitting at a bar or standing in a waiting line.

phpbb is an old clunky platform that was designed waaay before most people had phones that could connect to the internet.

if you look at forums that do have a mobile version you can see that they are still very active.

I was thinking about working out a draft for a new type of forum/community platform but I'm afraid that the internet has more then enough social media and trying to build up something from scratch without reinventing hot water is pretty hard

I checked your profile and you are currently at negative 123 points. That is a sweet number. But I think you are on your way to getting positive forum points. All the best. I am just hovering around 0 these days. Tough to post and do everything in life as well.
