PHP BB Code - Links and Pics

I started this Category after onlinerevu asked in the general chat on how to add pictures to a forum post.

So this Blogpost will be all about Links and Pictures.

1. Links.
Links are easy, to post a link you can just past the entire url in the post and it will show the entire link as text.
So if I was to type or paste the entire link in the post without using the full 'power' of the link tag a link to google would just show up as http://google.com

If you want to display other text then the entire url you need to use the URL tags

syntax:
Code:
[url=<Location you want to Link to>]<Text to display>[/url]

So if you want to show a link to google you just type the following:

BBCode:
Code:
[url=http://google.com]google[/url]

NOTE: there are no "quotes" in the url tag.

NOTE: Some links that have brackets or parenthesis will display incorrectly.
most links to Microsoft Library pages have this. EG: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa752084(v=vs.85).aspx

2. Adding a Picture.

The basic syntax for a pîcture is:
Code:
[img]<Full Path of the picture>[/img]

First of all you need to upload the picture to the internet, this forum doesn't provide a way to upload images to the forum server so you should use your own hosting ( like I do ) or another site like eg. imageshack.

I've uploaded a picture I want to share on the forum to this location: http://marcuzzospalazzo.frih.org/forum_pics/topic_link.png

after I uploaded the picture I just:
- copy/past the entire url in the forum post
- select the text so it's highlighted
- click on the Img button

like so:

the BBCode Code for this image is
Code:
[img]http://marcuzzospalazzo.frih.org/forum_pics/post_picture_on_frihost_forum.png[/img]

3. Adding a Picture to a link.
Creating a picture that has a link is basicly combining the above.

syntax:
Code:
[url=<Location you want to Link to>][img]<Full Path of the picture>[/img][/url]

Example:

BBCode Code for this image
Code:
[url=http://www.frihost.com/users/Marcuzzo/blog/vp-158954.html][img]http://marcuzzospalazzo.frih.org/forum_pics/post_picture_on_frihost_forum.png[/img][/url]

4. Linking to a specific post.
If you want to post a link to a specific post all you need to do is to click on the little icon left of the posted date.
This will append the #name of the post to the topic URL and gives you a direct link to the topic

PS: this information is specific to PHPBB and not frihost Wink

Those arrows are PERFECT! What software did you use for the graphics? Cool

Greenshot, it's a screenshot utility that has a picture editor.

Looks like the pictures are gone. At least I don't see any. Sad

So apparently Marcuzzo has left Frihost and with him his site where he hosted his pictures went away as well ? A good example showing that the saying "The internet never forgets" is wrong. Actually the internet forgets a lot, many links end up nowhere real fast.

Yeah, I have noticed that too. A lot of things disappear from the web which is sad. But the saying could still be something to live by because you never know how long something you post will be up there and who will read it. A lot of things that has disappeared can be found at archive.org if you know what you are looking for but that is mostly text and not so much images. The images in this blog post seem to be gone forever Sad

I'm almost certain Marcuzzo will call in some time. I know Frihost has a special touch with him like the other way round - he's got memories here. Very Happy
