Editing Windows hosts file

This is basic tutorial about how to edit Windows hosts file.

According to Wikipedia, the hosts file is used to map hostnames to IP addresses. Why would you want to modify it? It is pretty easy way to block malicious websites, prevent other users (like children) from using some sites by disabling access to them and so on. But most important use is to block unwanted advertisements displayed during regular web browsing - I will describe this in other blog post.

You have to be aware that the hosts file is extremely important file and you can't delete it completely and while editing it you have to be sure what you are doing and why.

Editing the file manually may be too hard for some users and/or is long proces compared to using third-party software. However, I will try to explain you how to do that. If you want to skip all the boring stuff and just easily edit contents of the hosts file, proceed below to paragraph describing use of the mentioned third-party application.

Manual editing of hosts file
1. Open Notepad as administrator. To do that, hold Shift and Right-click on shortcut to Notepad. Choose Run as Administrator.
2. Press File and choose Open.
3. Proceed to location of the hosts file

4. Do the modifications you wanted.
5. Save the file. Ensure that you choose All types and delete the .txt extension so the name of the file is still just hosts.

Modifying hosts file using application
The application is very simple, lightweight and trusted (as I've been writing this text, there were over 12,000 downloads of the file).
Creator is Buster Collings.

Download the application here ( link) and use whenever you want without not necessary work.
