Server 1 move

I'll be moving the accounts on server 1 to a big cPanel VPS since it's a bit overkill to keep the few remaining accounts on a whole server. So server 1 will become VPS 1. This only affects people with a something.frihost.net subdomain. (less than 100)

The move will most likely be done within a few days (more information to follow). I'll try to minimize downtime, just like I did with the move of the forums. The difference is, however, that all the files need to be backed up, moved and again reinstated, which can take a while. However, the websites should still be accessible during that time, although database changes during that time won't be kept.

I might also upgrade the mysql version from 4 to 5 at the same time, after doing a few tests.

The change will normally not cause any problems to the websites (apart from the mysql upgrade). However the people that have their domains pointed to the ip address (like from afraid.org), will need to change the ip address to the new one.

I'll most likely be moving the accounts/websites tomorrow. I already lowered the ttl's (time to live of the dns settings, the time a dns entry is cached) to 10 minutes, but it takes some time for this change to propagate.

If everything goes ok, the transfer should be done pretty fast and will only take the time it takes to actually transfer the accounts (hopefully not more than 1-2 hours) and as previously stated, during that time the websites will continue to be online (if everything goes all right, no downtime at all), just the database changes during the transfer won't be kept.

The mysql version is mysql 5 and it didn't seem to cause any problems to the test websites, so I'll keep it.

Will server 2 have the same fate (eventually)
garionw on Wed Sep 12, 2007 1:29 am
how will this effect dns? I have many regs going to my server1 site.
Vrythramax on Wed Sep 12, 2007 2:24 am
So we now have VPS1, server 1 and server 3. This could start becoming confusing Razz
Whats the new IP?
mathiaus on Wed Sep 12, 2007 2:29 pm
VPS1, Server 2 and Server 3.

The new ip is 72.249.102.79.

@Vrythramax, I'm going to forward the dns to the new server. So for domains with nameservers ns1.frihost.net and ns2.frihost.net and for subdomains the move should be (almost) immediate. If you have set your A record (or similar) at a dns service, than you'll need to change it yourself after the move and this might take a bit longer. (although the websites will continue to show, albeit on the old server)

@garionw, most likely not, at least not in the soon future.

What does VPS stand for?
m-productions on Wed Sep 12, 2007 5:39 pm
It stands for Virtual Private Server. It's a virtual server inside another server.

By the way, I started the transfer of accounts, so please don't make any changes on the old server anymore since those won't be recorded in the new server (unless your account wasn't transferred yet).

Cheers

@bloodrider, I might upgrade mysql to version 5 on server 2, but probably not in the soon future.

By the way, the account transfer is over 50% done. It should be finished in a bit more than an hour.

basically, bondings is taking server 1 and merging it with server 2.

No, the VPS is on a different server, one that hosts a few VPS's. Instead of a complete server, it will be hosted on a part of a server, a virtual server (vps).

Besides, the transfer is finished and I updated the dns settings.

Did you ever "own" sever 1, or did you rent it, and whats going to happen to it now?

No, it is/was rented. And I already moved all the websites to the VPS and most seem to be working fine at their new home.

So server 1 is nonexistant to Frihost now? Its just VPS 1, Server 2, and Server 3?

Indeed. It will be gone in a bit over a week.

Something important for the people who changed their dns settings, like mx records in their cPanel (server 1). It could be that the settings were lost due to the move and you'll need to change them back!

So, I'm one of those few with the *.frih.net domain name. How should I go about logging into the admin area? Where should I FTP? Thanks in advance!

There are more *.frih.net sub-domains than there are *.frihost.net sub-domains!

Links and other account info are on your account page.
