New home page design

I have changed the design of the home page. It now has information about both the free web hosting and the free domains. It also features all the forums and the latest forum and blog posts. And it's a complete-width (liquid) home page, which is what I wanted but wasn't easy to make, especially without tables.

Please note that it is a work in progress and will need to be changed. I finally enabled it in the spirit of having at least something new, considering I already made several new home pages but never used them in the end. Now at least I can start making it better.

Anyway, do you like it? What do you think should be changed? Are there any bugs, like boxes that go weird on some browser/os/screen size combinations?

Integrating it with phpbb - very nice!
But, it's a bit of information overload...

The web hosting information (in basic, graphic form, if possible) needs to be more highlighted, and a prominent 'sign up here' or 'get started' link would be good.

Or perhaps a simplified welcome page that points to this page?

It's tough, because I do see the value in having all the forums displayed, and the latest posts from both blogs and forums... But all those links could easily distract and confuse someone unfamiliar with the place.
Perhaps just rearranging the fonts/colors could make that better... the eye seems drawn to the side bars, as they are more colorful...
ocalhoun on Tue Nov 30, 2010 1:12 am
Yes, I agree that the eye is drawn to the sides. I do think that the detail is useful though, so I'd go along with changing the colour scheme to draw the eye to the middle, rather than simplifying much more...
Bikerman on Tue Nov 30, 2010 1:17 am
PS - one simple mod would be to change the background to a blue....something along the lines of:
Bikerman on Tue Nov 30, 2010 1:37 am
I don't like the font of the title headings. It's too pixelated looking.

I don't think changing the background color of the middle boxes is a good idea. It would add to the confusion I think and wouldn't look very uniformed. If changing the color of anything, I think the side boxes would need to be a light grey. But I wouldn't do that either.
Ghost Rider103 on Tue Nov 30, 2010 2:20 am
I think there is just too much text and not enough graphic elements.
Ghost Rider103 on Tue Nov 30, 2010 2:22 am
From a design perspective, there's way too many links. The side menu would be far better as a drop-down local navigation bar, or as a clamshell on the side with hiding on click off features. Doesn't take much Javascript to do that. I also think it looks too basic and too plain; The whole thing looks underworked and archaic; like an informational website from the 1990's. It needs a whole new refreshed look, not just a warm-over.
LittleBlackKitten on Tue Nov 30, 2010 3:08 am
I actually like it, at least better than the old homepage. It's not as washed out or content-less looking. However, more colors would be nice, and the high volume of text could probably be offset with a graphic of some sort. Have a banner or logo or something?
wombatrpgs on Tue Nov 30, 2010 3:45 am
Sorry, It is a bit of an overload to me. I understand what you are trying to do but it is not working for me.
standready on Tue Nov 30, 2010 3:56 am
Looks good. The old design was too small and just a box in the center. This is looking much better.

The boxes are resizing well in Chrome.

But the centre looks empty compared to the sides.

Maybe you can move the latest posts section to the center. That way each line can hold a complete topic title instead of the 4 lines for a title when I resize the window.

On the whole, I love the changes you are making. Good work Bondings
FunDa on Tue Nov 30, 2010 4:36 am
Nice to see you've finally changed it, Bondings! Smile But from a new user's perspective, I think it needs to look a bit more attractive. And please reword the first paragraph.
saratdear on Tue Nov 30, 2010 5:15 am
nice design but too long community forums why dont you make it drop down like.

and there is need some graphical content.

sorry if i am wrong anyway.

Wow, very awesome change. I've been here for a long time and this is a VERY nice touch, Bondings. Keep up the awesome work man!

Just a few things of note Cool:

  • Center Column - Top Box - Right Side margin does not line up with the box below it. Looks like possibly 2px off. This is presumably a width, border, or padding issue.
  • Overall I would suggest that the margin between the boxes try to stay consistent as possible despite fluid width. It appears that, when the page is resized, the vertical margins change while the horizontal do not. This may be intended, it may not be, either way I suggest a different behavior.
  • A quick login box would be very desirable, I've wanted one for years and never said anything. Smile

In closing I like the change, keep up the good work. Smile

Edit: Ahh I should probubly state that I'm using Google Chrome.

I'm completely OK with the design, but not the "About Us". There is much too little info about you in it. Can't you just say a few sentences, even if it is along the lighter lines of mOrpheuS? The first thing that I did when I first joined Frihost was to find out more about Frihost, and had to dig very deep to find anything. Hence when I visited Max's old Website towards the beginning of 2009, where he had really nice write-ups about everyone, including some of the posters like Miss Dixie who have been around for many years, I was very excited. Why not get Max to do something similar for Frihost for the About Us page as what I liked in his style then was that he obviously cared about everyone and the light touch of a sense of humour, and since he was the author, all of the write-ups had the same style.

May I also make a suggestion for a link to one of the many threads that have lots of good things to say about Frihost? Maybe those links could be listed under a heading like "Why our Posters like Frihost" or something to that effect.
deanhills on Tue Nov 30, 2010 6:32 pm
I think it's to simple by design, and too complicated for new visitors (seems like untrustable).

Information about FriHost or services are not well-marked.
darkeagle on Tue Nov 30, 2010 9:02 pm
I'm great with the new home page. I do agree there is an information overload, but the old one was pretty minimalist. Its not easy to design these things anyways. I'd stick in a couple of graphics instead of some of the blockier text, just so visitors can absorb everything at first glance. I think its essential to communicate that you're offering free web hosting, and top level domains, just for posting on a forum. When I first started with frihost, that one-liner made me dig further.
ProfessorY91 on Tue Nov 30, 2010 11:32 pm
I see much improvement. Nice job.
I do notice a problem when I resize my window to a smaller width.
This bar:
Will make the ACCOUNT part go to the next line, making it outside the light blue bar. When making even smaller the page gets unreadable. The search part makes it worse at smaller resolutions.

I think you could improve on limiting the amount of characters per latest English forum posts thread title. Some titles are quite wide and will use multiple lines.
I recommend setting your display to 1024x768 resolution and cap the posts shorter until it has a perfect fit.
(this also applies to the blogs)

Next tip is that I think that giving the left panel (Community Forum) a fixed width. Quite wide to be exact. Maybe give the right panel an identical fixed width as long as the main body remains intact.
Maybe drop support for 800x600 displays.

The size of the font could be increased to make it stand out more. Words like this include "Frihost", "Free web hosting" and "Free domains". This surely catches the eye of a new visitor. They start reading but won't actually believe this. I didn't believe this service you are providing until I tried it myself Wink

You might want to improve this page for users which are logged in. Making it more of a personal page. "You have 3 unread messages", statistics of the user like coins, posts and frih, show the 10 latest posted threads on forums that matter. Make the user able to track a thread on the front page. Stuff like that.

Anyways. Great improvement. Much better and dynamic. My bet is that this looks way more professional, getting more traffic as well as the main page contains a lot of keywords (see community forum list Wink ).

Keep it up Wink

Well, for starters it's a massive improvement. But as for the design, it is a massive information overload, as others have already mentioned.

It's a bit confusing as to exactly where we need to look. So from a design point, it's not that great. With that been said, it's very technically impressive and a great improvement over the old homepage which made the site look "dead."
LostOverThere on Wed Dec 01, 2010 1:03 pm
It is good . I like to see new page.
spring567 on Wed Dec 01, 2010 1:32 pm
It's very nice, but it kinda looks like all those other sites, where you can get hosting. And it kinda looks very cluttered and kinda 90's because of the basic link navigation, instead of using some images for some of it.
milleja46 on Fri Dec 03, 2010 1:25 am
Very good...
ankur2010 on Fri Dec 03, 2010 2:21 pm
Well, i've never seen the old website but this new one made me sign up for a new account.

Now let see if building a website will be as easy and making an account.

Very good. It allows me a comprehensive view of what is going on.

Great design bondings keep it up i like it.
airh3ad on Mon Dec 06, 2010 3:01 pm
Good effort, as always. But like the others, I find that there are too much information, though it is very comprehensive for experienced ones. Graphics and better colour scheme might help. You can try How about a competition with free domain for redesigning the website design?

is beautiful ! Sorry for my bad english
ralf on Tue Dec 07, 2010 10:03 pm
Very nice indeed, I noticed it right away. It looks more professional and is similar to how some of the larger web hosts do it with the small boxes.

Always nice to see improvements.

A nice all-in-one (well almost) page. Good work.
bukaida on Thu Dec 09, 2010 1:02 pm
Just throwing it out there because it didn't get much attention in the suggestions forum but I think there should be a login box on the home page. It would make loging in quicker for people with slower connections.

Finally something new for index page. I love it.

The first visual change I remember from the day I signed up till now.

This is a good move towards changing the world, without breaking a record or hitting major internet milestone Smile

I'm web designer and I understand many critics posted here, but, I'm really different, guess why? This design evokes my memories in the '90s when everything was simple.

I would only suggest one thing: separating the styling from the content. The current design uses inline styling and that will be bad when you decide to alter the look of the site later.
jmlworld on Mon Dec 20, 2010 3:00 pm
I'm getting the feeling it's a bit back to the 90s with the design. Although I'm not against simplicity, but sometimes its just too much.

Frihost has languages forums so multilingual homepage is will be better...
darkeagle on Thu Jan 20, 2011 4:38 pm
I was overwhelmed at first. I thought just too much text. A bit of graphics would be better, I guess.

Would multilingual home page help the text situation though...?
