Free domains (beta)

I'm very glad to announce our newest feature, free domains. Yes, that's right, we will be offering top level domains (like .com/.net/.org) to our users!

You will be able to get them in exchange for Coins. At the moment we will start with 350 Coins for a one year registration or renewal. This amount will most likely change from time to time due to promotions and also because I'll try to find an optimal value.

In practice you will receive a GoDaddy gift card that matches the value of the domain registration/renewal.

I marked it as beta since there might still be some bugs and problems (and not enough information/help) that will only be found out during operation. But normally everything should work.

And if you have a domain and you want to renew it with this feature, please make sure to request it well in advance, at least a good month or two before the domain expiration.

Free domains will also be given out as prizes for our upcoming competitions. The only problem is that I still have to finish the code of the competition system and the last parts are always the hardest. Wink

What's that law that says the last 20% of a project takes 80% of the time...?

Ha, this sounds pretty neat though, if only I had any coins. It seems like getting to that amount would be quite a feat, considering anyone interested in using coins would have a -1 point a day in effect as well...
wombatrpgs on Sat Sep 18, 2010 7:15 am
Once you can get your points back up to 45, it is easy to maintain your points as long as you post at least once or twice every two days or so.

I can see where it would be difficult if you only have like 10 points. But really once you get your points to the max, it isn't hard to keep them there at all.
Ghost Rider103 on Sat Sep 18, 2010 7:39 am
So it means that one have to reach 45 points to be able to get a coin. Well all the same it is a nice development.
uchejohn on Sat Sep 18, 2010 1:15 pm
I guessed right! Ever since I saw "coins" I just knew it was about domains. Wink
saratdear on Sat Sep 18, 2010 3:34 pm
Cool, so most guesses were correct, it is free domains!

350 coins at a rate of 0.6 points means about 600 points to earn a free domain name. And at an averadge of 2 points a post this means 300 posts. And 300 posts is a lot. Added to the 1 point that is taken off the account of points each day a user has a website it means in an averadge of 2 posts a day that 150 days must be posted. That is almost half a year. And those 5 months have to been posted another 75 posts to keep the website online. So there are about 375 posts needed to earn a free domain in 5 months in a averadge posting range of 2 posts each day.

If imagined a domain name costs $ 12 to register it means each post is worth $ 0.02. And this is almost the same amount of dollarcents other post for earning websites use to pay for a post.
zeda on Tue Sep 21, 2010 5:49 pm
Maybe this will make me post more, though I doubt I will achieve 350 points any time soon.
Ghost900 on Tue Sep 21, 2010 6:57 pm
That's a cool idea MrBondings Smile

Awesome
FunDa on Thu Sep 23, 2010 4:58 am
The counting made earlier is based on the assumption that coins are delivered on a rate of 0.6 coins for 1 point above 45 points. But it seems the coins are given out on a rate of 0.6 to the power of 1. So when the main goal of the comment made earlier still remains valid it might be necessary to change the exact number of posts that have to be made to earn a free domain.
zeda on Thu Sep 23, 2010 3:31 pm
Bring on the competition ! Very Happy
TeamChrome on Thu Sep 23, 2010 5:26 pm
Very cool, Bondings! More and regular activity is easy enough and if zeda calcs are correct, not hard to achieve. hmmm, I have domain renewal in March. Yikes, behind the curve (laugh). Thank you, sir, for all the great things you do for us.
standready on Thu Sep 23, 2010 8:34 pm
Great idea, to have a bonus to look forward to if we consistently post beyond the minimum requirement. The idea that we get more if we post a few points over on a regular basis than if we post a lot once in a while should encourage more useful posts.

I would probably find it easier to just buy a domain than to earn coins for it, but would enjoy the fact that I had "earned" the domain.

I think it is not going to be very easy getting 350 coins. As a matter of fact, I think it is going to be very difficult considering the amount of posts u need to make to get a single coin. 350 is a long way up.
eneka38 on Fri Oct 22, 2010 9:18 am
Yes 350 coins is quite a lot of coins.

But as proved by deanhills, it is possible to obtain more than 350 coins in one month. I believe deanhills had 351 coins exactly one month from the official announcement.

Though that is quite a lot of posting.

Please keep in mind all posts must be quality posts.

I always missed ddBoard after it vanished. ddBoard and friHost are the two best boards for me that started my online career. ddBoard used to provide free top level domain names and friHost provides premium like free hosting. Enjoyed the combination for more than two years till I finally moved to paid hosting. But, I'm very thankful to both of these forums and will remain supporting them for ever.

Thought ddBoard vanished, I'm glad to know that frihost is starting free top level domain name giveaway. This will really inspire forum members to become more active.

I'm writing a post on my blog friHost to HostGator which is scheduled for 19 Nov 2010. I'll always talk high about friHost, always.

This is very good. Although I am a bit new here, I have a feeling that it is going to be very difficult too. 350 is a very long way up. But I think a free domain is worth all the posts you make.
chuksfree on Fri Nov 19, 2010 11:46 am
Free is good, very good, I for one would support this 100%(not saying I would support by paying, but I support the idea Cool )

matttaylor777 on Fri Mar 18, 2011 1:16 am
Not necessarily. If you're like me and always post just once or twice a day, they'll never stack up.
wombatrpgs on Fri Mar 18, 2011 11:40 pm
...but if you get up to 45 points first then chill out and continue with your 1-2 posts per day, you'll start getting the coins.
watersoul on Fri Mar 18, 2011 11:59 pm
Well, I'm up to 168. And considering all this is free, this is awesome anyways.

I've never seen a better free hosting service than frihost. There were a few others, but they all have restrictions and forced ads and things like that. What Bondings does is awesome.

Thanks Bondings

Do you mean how long it's registered for or how long the domains-for-coins service is running?
