About downtime and new server replacing Server 2/3

I use managed servers to be sure that if I screw things up, at least they will be able to fix them. I asked them this weekend to upgrade php and apache since there might be some problems related to the upgrade.

They had the problems and at first couldn't even get Apache back to working. Then finally when it worked, the server started acting weird with some errors and Apache taking all swap causing it to be unusable. So they kept trying and actually managed to break Apache again (core dumps this time) and were waiting for DirectAdmin to solve it. I suppose a part of the problem is the FreeBSD OS. While they waited for the DirectAdmin staff to react, I actually managed to get it working again (although it might not be for long).

Anyway, before I got it working I already ordered a new server to replace this one. One of the following days/week (when it's ready and I have time for it), I'll move the websites on server 2/3 to it. It's a better server, so even if things are working out fine with this server, at least things should be a lot faster. (quad core processor vs dual core and 8GB of RAM instead of the current 2GB and a lot more disk space)

In any case, my apologies about the long downtime. Hopefully it won't become much more.

Please note that there are currently a few minor problems with the server. All connections to other websites from php do not work (socket, curl, ...). Maybe the webmail and phpMyAdmin will have problems and maybe some non-php scripts too. I'll try to solve the easiest ones, but since everything will be moving to a different server anyway it's not really that important.

Thanks Steve for all the hard work. Looks as though once all the challenges have been sorted out that we will be surfing Frihost to the equivalent of a Porche. Super fast. Although I must say, I don't know why, but Frihost feels faster now than before. They must have done something that is different, or is it just my imagination? Smile

I wonder who Steve is... Razz

Maybe it's the new versions op php and Apache? Or simply less visitors after the downtime, but that will probably change soon.

But I have also noticed that it is indeed faster. This is how fast it is supposed to be, there was always a problem with a slight (to long) delay.

Thanks for the update

Thanks Bondings for the info, good to know it has been fixed for now at least. I figured it was more then a server crash after it was down so long.
Ghost900 on Tue Feb 09, 2010 8:09 pm
Glad we're finally back up and running.

When you change over to the new server, will this cause more downtime during the switch?
Ghost Rider103 on Tue Feb 09, 2010 11:02 pm
Nice, it got me worried so i am glad it is back Smile
Flakky on Tue Feb 09, 2010 11:55 pm
Hm... Is there to be any downtime associated with this transfer? Or at least some guarantee it will work?
wombatrpgs on Wed Feb 10, 2010 12:26 am
There will be some downtime during the switch. More precisely, updates will be lost. I will transfer all the accounts and then change the nameservers. In the mean time, all changes (like comments/posts) once the transfer is started won't be reflected on the new server, but at least the visitors will see something.

But I'll have more information later. The server isn't setup yet.

Anybody else experiencing
"Deprecated: Function set_magic_quotes_runtime() is deprecated in /usr/home/ocalhoun/domains/ on line 106"
On a phpbb3 installation after the downtime ended?

Yes, me and my sites.

Bondings, great update! As deanhills told, now feels great the speed.

Only a few things to get tuned:

1) Please turn off in the php.ini the mode display errors. I have too many warnings in my sites, like these verbose output:

Deprecated: Function split() is deprecated in /usr/home/xxxx...
Deprecated: Function eregi() is deprecated in /usr/home/xxxx...
Warning: Parameter 1 to modMainMenuHelper::buildXML() expected to be a reference...
Deprecated: Assigning the return value of new by reference is deprecated in /usr/home/xxxx....

2) I'm get connection timeout in DirectAdmin MySQL Management, when I try to optimize, check or fix the database.

Thanks, Bondings, I think was worth the effort and I'll take this opportunity to upgrade my old scripts to newer ones. Embarassed

If updates will be lost on the websites that are on server 2/3, does this mean any recent posts made here at Frihost will also be lost when the server is updated?
Ghost Rider103 on Wed Feb 10, 2010 6:46 am
thanks alot for this refresshing news. it was aweful when we could not get onto our site. great work keep it up and i am glad the server will changed to an even faster one thats good.
Greatking on Wed Feb 10, 2010 8:57 am
@Ghost Rider103, last time I disabled posting and maybe some other stuff during the transfer. I will also move Frihost separately to minimize this time to about an hour or so.

Hi! After the downtime, my website is no longer capable of producing thumbnail images. My blog works on the capacity of the server to create thumbnail images automatically. You can find my website here: I was wondering, will my website server's ability to create thumbnails be restored?
mgeek on Wed Feb 10, 2010 2:11 pm
@mgeek, what do you use to generate thumbnail images? An external service/website or something on the server?
Bondings on Wed Feb 10, 2010 2:40 pm
My wordpress blog is not loading correctly. I think its css or php problem. Anybody else have this problem? My blog
metalfreek on Thu Feb 11, 2010 4:02 pm

I always thought that it is the server of that was creating the thumbnail images.
mgeek on Thu Feb 11, 2010 5:19 pm
@Q5U8, I have turned off the display errors as you requested. It's indeed the best thing to do, otherwise a lot of website are getting warnings and resulting problems with layout.
Bondings on Thu Feb 11, 2010 6:01 pm
Due to high demand at the datacenter, it will probably take until about sunday before we get the new server. And then after configuring/testing it, I will transfer the websites, which wil hence happen on sunday at the earliest.
Bondings on Sat Feb 13, 2010 1:58 am
Wow, Quad Core processor and 8 GB of RAM? Nice Razz
Daniel15 on Sun Feb 14, 2010 9:11 am
@Daniel15, if I ever get the server. It seems to take quite a while. Hopefully I'll get it by tomorrow.

Keep up the good work!

Looks like my site was transfered. The wordpress errors are all gone. Everything looks good, thanks again Bondings!
driftingfe3s on Mon Feb 15, 2010 11:55 pm
Did something change? I'm suddenly getting all of the warnings again.
wombatrpgs on Tue Feb 16, 2010 1:30 am
I changed it to show errors, just not the deprecated ones. Maybe it's not completely working?
Bondings on Tue Feb 16, 2010 1:02 pm
Well, it's a warning, just not from a deprecated thing...
Warning: trim() expects parameter 1 to be string, array given in /usr/home/wombatrp/domains/ on line 463

Now imagine fifty of those on the header of a page. But actually, I worked up the motivation to actually fix the problem, so it's all set. Warning is gone now.
wombatrpgs on Tue Feb 16, 2010 3:38 pm
Are they hosting in 24/7 even if this is a free hosting?
