Server 2/3 and 4 moved to a new datacenter (7 Oct)

Both our servers will be transferred to a different Savvis datacenter next Wednesday, 7 October at 12AM CST. The physical move is supposed to take about 90 minutes (downtime) and is not avoidable since they are moving everything. Unfortunately, they are also going to change the ip addresses.

Users of VPS 1 are unaffected.

For the others, there will be some downtime, hopefully not much; only 90 minutes or less. The people who pointed their domains directly to our ip addresses, will have to change it after the move, the others don't have to do anything.

EDIT: The move was done a lot earlier than planned. Here are the new ips:
The new ip of Server 4 is 72.232.207.138. The new ip of Server 2/3 is 72.232.207.74.

You really should give the servers some nicknames Laughing
This is getting confusing.

I did it by the name servers "ns1.frih.net and ns2.frih.net" do i gotta change them?
silverdown on Sun Oct 04, 2009 1:54 am
Silverdown, you likely won't need to do anything if that's the case -- Bondings will certainly be fixing those after the server move, so you personally won't have to Smile

@Silverdown, just like Hogwarts mentioned, if you use the nameservers then you don't need to change anything. The nameservers are moving too, and the only thing that needs to be done there is that I will need to change them to the new ip after the move.

Only if you specified the server ip address (mostly if you use a dns service like freedns or something from your registrar where you specify our ip address), then you would need to change it.

i agree Smile

@Bondings. I'm curious, is this a physical move just for Frihost or will you be moving too? Does this represent a major event that needs to be celebrated? Smile
deanhills on Mon Oct 05, 2009 1:07 am
@deanhills, the server is in America and Bondings is in Belgium -- I don't think Bondings will be moving Sad

The guys who used the name servers to point their domains to the servers (e.g. ns1.frih.net & ns2.frih.net) should not be effected, right?

This will become another improvement step.
jmlworld on Mon Oct 05, 2009 3:43 pm
Will we get a notification of the new IPs or will they be published here?
Mrs Lycos on Mon Oct 05, 2009 5:08 pm
@Hogwarts. Thanks for the info. I don't think I ever really knew where the server was. Think in the back of my mind I thought it would have been Europe, somewhere in Holland or Belgium, maybe even the UK. Sounds like a high-class joint where we are moving to however. Hope it will get rid of all our alien attackers. Anyway, wish Bondings and Frihost best of good luck with the move.

O.K. I have not to do anything for my site, thank for your improvement and for your notification, Bondings.

Appreciate and thank again.

Is this going to effect out uptime percentage at all, or is it still unknown?

Also, will this stop most of the attacks that we have been getting recently?
Ghost Rider103 on Tue Oct 06, 2009 8:24 am
All servers are being moved to a newer datacenter, it wasn't my choice. I only had a choice about which date the servers would be moved. And I'm not moving myself (as others mentioned I live in Belgium and the servers are in the USA).

@Mrs Lycos, once I know the new ip's I will publish them here.

@jmlworld, you won''t need to do anything if you used those nameservers.
Bondings on Tue Oct 06, 2009 1:57 pm
I guess this is just a move by the datacenter? Or should this actually prevent attacks, as Ghostrider asked?
wombatrpgs on Tue Oct 06, 2009 2:51 pm
It is indeed just a move by the datacenter. This most likely won't prevent any attacks.
Bondings on Tue Oct 06, 2009 4:22 pm
The new ip of Server 4 is 72.232.207.138. The new ip of Server 2/3 is 72.232.207.74.

Please report if there are any problems (although the people who are unable to access the site due to dns problems won't likely be able to post Wink ).

I'm sorry, but I'm not a whizz-kid with web addresses....can someone spell out what I need to do to get my webspace (and sites on it) active again, please?
wellerchap on Wed Oct 07, 2009 7:24 pm
DirectAdmin isn't working yet, I forgot to mention that in my last post.

@wellerchap, normally you don't need to do anything, unless you pointed a domain to our previous ip (and in that case you simply need change that to the new ip). Normally most people use the nameservers and in that case they don't need to change anything.

Anyway, which domains aren't working? Most likely it's your isp caching the previous ip and for pretty much everyone else it's already working. You can check if it works on other locations by using a web proxy like http://www.hidemyass.com/ or http://www.the-cloak.com/login.html .

Thanks Bondings. Looks as though everything went effortlessly. I even learned where our servers are! I'm now trying to figure out where in the United States. I thought maybe St. Louis, Montana? I was looking at the map below, and wondering whether those Frihosters in the United States and Europe would receive faster speeds because of being more connected than for example Frihosters in the Middle East. The Middle East does not have a network node or data centre, would that make a difference?

deanhills on Wed Oct 07, 2009 9:08 pm
@Deanhills, it's now in the DataBank datacenter: http://www.databank.com/services/datacenter in Dallas (Texas).

The connection to the servers is normally way better in the USA and Europe than in other parts of the world. The time it takes for a packet to travel between a computer in the Middle East and the server is way bigger than from the USA or Europe usually. This is usually called ping (a program that sends a packet to a computer and back and measures the time). Also, there may also be way more lost packets (although a bad wireless connection is probably worse).

The actual speed in Mb/sec , though, depends on your connection limit. The server itself is on a 10Mbit connection and you should be able to reach that if your dowload connection is that big, no matter where you live.

DirectAdmin should be working fine again on both the servers.

Anyone having any problems still?
Bondings on Thu Oct 08, 2009 11:03 am
Thanks for the info Bondings. This explains a lot to me, I now have a greater understanding why our Broadband in the Middle East is so much slower than in the US. I always thought it was because technology was not as advanced so that the same 512kbps in the Middle East would be much slower than 512kbps in the US, but now have a different understanding for it, that makes a great deal more sense.

Everything is working in excellent shape as just before the shift. I also received the Tweet. Many thanks for everything. Smile
