Server 2/3 DDOS

Since yesterday (26 august), Server 3 has been under a DDOS attack. Since Server 2 accounts are hosted on Server 3, this affects all frih.net and frih.org accounts.

Please don't worry about the websites, the server is completely intact, the problem is a DDOS, meaning all the bandwidth is maliciously (or due to some mistake, but not likely) being maxed out, causing the server to not respond anymore and also disrupt the network of the datacenter.

Anyway, the main server ip was nullrouted (which seems to be the target of the DDOS). Since the frihost.com is on a slightly different ip address, I guess it started working again after the nullrouting. (All the traffic to the main server ip is discarded, which includes the DDOS traffic, but also all websites except frihost.com)

The websites should be accessible tomorrow since the nullrouting is for 24 hours, so I guess around 12 am GMT (rough guess), it should hopefully be normal again.

@Aredon, we already had a few DDOS attacks (at least claimed by the datacenter/techs). However this time the ip was nullrouted, which never happened before.

My apologies for all these problems.

By the way, you can still access your DirectAdmin from one of the other ip addresses of the server, like http://64.92.163.27:2222/ .

i don't really see the purpose in DDOS... I guess that's just because I haven't found a reason for why I might ever need to initiate one Razz Not that I'd ever be that cruel or stupid.. I have a life anyway, unlike the grand majority of the losers that do such things.

I was right, I noticed that the services on the server kept going up and down on the status page. Which hinted at that, is there any news on the server(s) being targetted? Is it just frihost or is it the entire data center?

Some people have to much spare time in the summer :/.
cr3ativ3 on Thu Aug 27, 2009 10:55 pm
All I know is that the main server ip was being targeted. I'm not even sure if it was a website or just the ip address (most likely). Hence I have also no idea what reason it could be due to. It wasn't a DDOS on the datacenter, which would be really hard to do (it's a big one, Savvis DC).

Well that stinks, I knew something was up.

airh3ad on Fri Aug 28, 2009 10:02 am
This attacks are targeting Frihost itself? Or are we just unkucky?
It's the second time, as I can recall, that something like this happen, maybe some one don't want us to be here. They might be trying to upset us, so we give up on Frihost and change to another webhoster (probably paid...). Just a theory Razz
bloodrider on Fri Aug 28, 2009 2:30 pm
Thanks to let us know, was already wondering what happened, thought maybe because I wasn't here for a long time, only my site was down Wink Glad that that's not the reason, but an attack is bad news too, wish you good luck with protecting Frihost!
Carola_Game on Fri Aug 28, 2009 2:35 pm
Out of the 3 years I've been here... never seen a DDOS on Frihost.

Really happy you're up and running again Steve. You can't imagine the "withdrawal symptoms" I had to go through. I even discovered a link online to check up the Status of Frihost Servers, and then noted Server 3 was down.

http://frihost-server-status.us.to/

My Website however was running perfectly throughout. Smile Dancing

I was checking Frihost.com every two hours or more and was really relieved when the old familiar forum log-in page finally made its appearance. One good way to test how "addicted" I am! Very Happy

OK, we're on the roll again .... Dancing

The null routing of the server ip's is obviously finished and the DDOS seems to be over (or mostly over) since everything seems to run fine. All websites and services should be working fine again now.

My apologies for all the downtime the past few days. I hope it stops here.

I'll update when/if I have more details available. Wink
Bondings on Sun Aug 30, 2009 7:35 pm
You can't imagine how fantastic it was when after all the times Server 3 had come up at the link below as being down (all in BIG reds), when I tried it just now, I get a total different picture with Server 3 all sparkling in green:

http://frihost-server-status.us.to/

I had no problem accessing my Website online, so all is working well now, and better than before.

Well done and thank you Steve! Must have been a great challenge and learning curve again! Smile

awazdohamko2004 on Sun Aug 30, 2009 9:56 pm
So why does Server 2/3 have so many more problems... and Server 1 like never has problems? I know in this case the attack was focused on Server 2/3 so that is why it went down, if the attack was focused on Server 1 it could have very well have gone down.

Im happy where back again thank you .thank you bondings for giving a time to fix our servers.
airh3ad on Mon Aug 31, 2009 2:23 am
I was trying to access the Frihost Forums and my website about 2 days, but it was throwing that DNS problem and when I headed the server status page I found that server 3 was down. First I thought it was the normal server restart but after hours I noticed that there is a BIG thing going on the server.

I really felt so good when I visited the forums last night around 20:00 (GMT +3) and found that the servers were attacked by shameless envy people who want to stop the Frihost awesomeness.

Thanks Steve for all the effort you made to nullify these attacks.

I think it is only fair to thank Bondings for everything - all the time and effort you've put into Frihost. Thanks!

YAY! Thanks for fixing this problem.. I was quite worried about the status of the servers for a while.

very recently, many servers are suffering occasional downtimes! I guess there is a good amount of load on all of them. I have somehow optimized my pages to a good amount of compression, and my pages load within 10 seconds. But still, the slow page leaves a bad impression on the visitor..
Chinmoy on Thu Sep 03, 2009 3:28 pm
Well I'm just glad the problem seems to be fixed. Now I can upload my website to update it. Smile

Has the server been restored to an earlier state? I noticed something I had fixed has turned back to not being fixed on my website.

Hey bonding, have you contemplated why someone would want to do DDoS attack on frihost?
Because what i have seen is that such attacks are generally directed towards paid but popular sites or the sites generally assumed to be 'evil'? Why frihost?

enkyskateboard on Tue Nov 03, 2009 10:47 pm
i don't understand why people would do DDOS attacks... they probably have nothing to do i guess lol
anyway there was a major DDOS attack in korea as well that was quite a huge news a several months ago because it only targeted huge community websites/government websites and they all managed to get the server down.
we have to make sure our computers aren't being used for those attacks because the hackers 'borrow' other people's computers to use for their attacks

What is DDOS?
raulmj on Tue Dec 01, 2009 3:23 am
Why am I replying on a topic about five years ago? Hm. DDos is a term people use when their internet and or server is getting a lot of ping. I hate DDos.
