Can there be a distinction made between discussion and debate?
A debate requires conflict, incompatible ideology, or clash.
A discussion does not, the people do not have to be on opposing sides.
A discussion can occur though even if personal opinions and viewpoints differ. In fact, the whole idea of having a discussion would be totally boring if everyone agreed on everything and had the exact same viewpoints.
Different perspectives make for great discussions. There is however, zero necessity for arguments or aggressiveness in proving points, it is simply a discussion. Does it mean a discussion can not contain passion or deliver good solid understandings? Of course they can, but unlike debate, where people often like to express their views heavily, a worthy discussion exists like any good conversation would. A discussion has a spirit of respect for the other person.
This is not the same as some debaters would like you to believe, that respect is not necessary. Discussions do not focus on winning like in a debate. It is simply an exchange of information and expressions. Just because a certain respect needs to be awarded to topics in discussion does not mean that discussions can not be interesting.
