Here are a couple of examples of remastering a poor original recording.
These are tracks by Swervedriver - the band in which my best mate Jez is drummer - which were recorded dry from radio (Australian) where they were playing a live set. They were then remastered using Wavelab and the basic EQ/Mastering plugins. The aim was to leave it 'rough' but get rid of FM hum, frequency drift and other artefacts on the recording. I also attempted, with variable success, to 'open up' the dynamic range a little since the Radio station used really heavy compression.
