The Rise of Slut Culture and the Fall of Innocence

A month or two ago, the blogosphere was abuzz with condemnation for a Dereon ad which featured little girls dressed in high heel boots, makeup, platforms and bedazzled jeans. To add insults to injury, their makeup and their general posing would make one believe that they were on their way to the club. I’m not sure if any of the little models were over the age of six.

We have gone a long way from playing dress up and pretending to be grown up or like our moms, aunts and grandmothers. Apparently the media is teaching young girls that they are grown and therefore need to get their “grown woman” on. Enter the rise of slut (or porn) culture.

It would be one thing to say it was isolated to just one race. Young girls of all races are having to face an attack on their sanity head on. Unfortunately, they don’t have adequate armor for this particular onslaught (no Rumsfeld).

In 1999, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and Jessica Simpson were all considered cookie-cutter singers. Their songs and videos were full of sexual innuendo, but they seemed innocent enough. We all understand that your teen years are the time when you figure out your sexual identity. As we got further into the new millennium, Britney, Christina, and Jessica were no longer cute, “girl next door” types. They were full on poster girls for male rags. As they made the 180 degree turn from cute to raunchy, we all witnessed as their popularity grew and they became more in demand. While Christina has matured, Jessica has fallen from grace and Britney deals with her demons, a new crop of young provocateurs has sprung and they’ve learned to go right down to business. They are no longer interested in being cute and earning our trust. They are interested in titillating the men, and captivating young girls with their sexual antics by way of dress, personal life and music.

Girlicious, a new group that was created while a good chunk of America watched on reality television, wasted no time in trying to get their fame on. While their first video, “Like Me,” was loaded with shots of them dancing suggestively in various forms of spandex or lycra, it couldn’t begin to compare with their latest video “Stupid Sh*t.” The video is rife with lesbian references, cliche male fantasies and “come hither” looks that would make Ashley Dupre blush. Word to Eliot Spitzer.

Did any of us know who Paris Hilton or Kim Kardashian were prior to their sex tapes? Were we checking for their reality shows before the sex tapes? With one sex tape, Paris and Kim have managed to propel themselves to celebrity status. Whatever their vocations and talents were prior to the tapes have become irrelevant. We just know that we saw them naked and they were doing “the nasty.” Now that’s how stars are born.

Unfortunately, the pressure to be sexy is taking its toll on young girls and even women. Whether they are taking the bait or fighting the urge to “sex it up,” the stress is becoming unbearable. Young girls aren’t simply learning that doing their hair and a cute outfit is enough to snag the boys they like. That’s not good enough! They must be able to put out on a regular, dress provocatively, be extremely slim without an ounce of fat, willing to be with other women, wear tons of overpriced makeup, dance like a seasoned veteran stripper and surrender their convictions in order to please the boy or man they desire.

In a study by the American Psychological Association, young girls and women “suffered intellectual, psychological and physical problems as a result of messages that push sexualization.” That’s quite serious.

With young girls and women being taught that their value is contingent solely upon their sexuality and physical appearance, it’s no wonder that they are getting stressed out. It’s like the whole world is telling them that they will never be appealing to anyone unless their sexiness and sexuality is broadcasted and validated.

Imagine you were standing in the middle of a field with no shelter in sight. Now imagine that hundreds of rocks and pebbles were being thrown at you from all around the field. The attack on young girls’ sanity can only be described as a figurative “stoning” or “tar and feathering.” If we don’t fight for our identities and for our young girls, who will?

When I was coming of age in the late eighties (I’m 26 by the way), video games weren’t the rage, cell phones were limited to Gordon Gecko/Wall Street types, and iPods and iTunes sounded like they were from “E.T.” I’d do it all over again though, rather than fight to save my soul in the new millennium, while trying to grow up at the same time.

Sure, I agree with some of the criticisms levelled here. This is the nature of freedom and progress... we are free to be critical of aspects of ourselves, free to seek to improve these aspects, and as history has demonstrated, we change and progress.

Most notably, you can look to the history we as the West as a whole have in gaining equality as an example of positive change and progress. The civil rights movement, feminism, gay rights...

The trouble with your position, I know from your previous postings, is that you think we should give up all the gains we have made, and go back to the days when women were slaves and gay people were illegal. Well, no thank you very much.

Even the criticisms here are better than, say, being married off at 14 to a cousin and given no options in life other than housewife.

I would take any day a 'figurative' stoning over a real one. In my country, I can safely say there has NEVER been a real stoning. Can you?

Also, I am adding this because you seem to have an obsession with 'slut culture'.

Does not Islam allow men to have multiple wives? Are those men not, therefore, sluts?

That is a good question.
but doesn't belong here..
i like to answer it tomarrow..
actually i have broked my toes and my feet is swelling .
i was not able to come and post here

By the way I... Have already answer this subject somewhere else .. Smile

Its not a Slut Culture its a Man Nature and God's system..
It is just to stop Prostitution..
It controls sexual sin-ism a lot of bad thing to come up..

When a men keeps 1 simple beautiful wife and also keeps 2 or 3 girlfriends or relation with call-girls or prostitutes he get called a rich talented man because he has got money to spend.
But when he Marry a widow or a poor girl( whose parents might got died in some accident) after his 1st wife them and keep them equal .. feed them equal.. cloth them equal .. treat them equal .. met with them equal .. have child from each of them .. educate them all .. love them and make them able to stand .. and when he dies and left his property for them and his / widow's children equal then how could you say its a slut_culture ?

Don't you think women is a more slaved in western culture where she is being forced by media medication to become Nude and act like a c__t ?
Well this is not a gain its an old sin returning again and again..
see the final result for freedom of sexuality ... this is what for your government and media is struggling for .. its is their (Zions) biggest achievement if they will be succeeded one day.. but they are unable to, just because of Islam and Christianity is parallel between this.. but for them Christianity is an easy goal (Peace of Cake) and can be motivated easily but Islam is a Big Hard rock to swallow.

I know i was little aggressive but i faced it alone with my fundamental (bigotry) mind.. and fundamentalism is not a bad thing if you are agree with me after watching this clip.. or you are not ?
If this might not be another gain near you?
gay people are just not satisfied with what they have ..
Its like a white man with a beautiful faithful wife, watches a poor negro neighbor's wife which is already hooked up with someone else with money.. (i am not criticizing negro i am criticizing human nature)
because he don't deserve a better thing for himself..
what we call "Honey is not for the jackass mouth"

A friend of My Nabi (Prophet - Peace Be Upon Him) Asked..

My Beloved Prophet tell me .. what Allah do when ever he is happy?

My Nabi (Prophet - Peace Be Upon Him) Answered:

Allah orders clouds to rain ..

My Beloved Prophet tell me .. what Allah do when he is more happier?

My Nabi (Prophet - Peace Be Upon Him) Answered:

Allah orders clouds to rain more..

My Beloved Prophet tell me .. what Allah do when he becomes so much happy?

My Nabi (Prophet - Peace Be Upon Him) this time smiled and Answered something different:

Allah give births to daughters (women)..

My Islam is very much Beautiful.. It tells me to love daughters (because they are precious) and find them a good man.
I have no objection with my Islam instead of firqah's (groups/divisions) which Islam denies but people likes to be belonged with them.
Man i was so tired but you make me to sit here and talk.. there are lots of things to say and answer..
but i am sleepy now.. its 5-AM here..

Why cant you feel that this is all is happening little too much fast..

In 300 hundred years These two American continental's civilization has got that much change that even India and other Asian countries didn't get that much change in 5000 years.

See the way they take it in the picture and they took their Interview .. this documentary shows them poor, innocent and non-guilty!
You must be feeling guilty for your self when you mind says they should be accused and heart says they should not.. This is the Power of Media .. which can turns a cruel sin into a beautiful feeling..
Yeah i know people here with freedom of speech rights will argue for their rights .. first they should get approval from their mother, sis or daughter for this kinda relation then they should come here to argue
I didn't want it to be post with this vulgar description but i didn't find any alternate for this video..

This is un-Human ..
Question:
Now tell me what is the different left between these couples and slum porks ?
Answer:
Two Legged and only clothes..!

I'm sorry to hear you broke your toes I hope you get better soon.

I don't want to watch the videos because I have already seen other videos like these. They are not considered normal people really. We don't really approve of incest, when it comes to children it is crime number 1. We don't really approve of cousins marrying either mind you.

Why do you choose to show videos of the strangest people in our culture, they are not really representative of our 'Western' culture.

Actually, I don't really have a trouble with polygamy, as long as women are also entitled to marry multiple men if they wish. I only wish to draw the parallels between what you call 'slut' and what you choose to not call 'slut'. For some reason you think it is a bad thing if a woman has sex with more than one man but you don't think it is bad if a man has sex with more than one woman.

Prostitution is a terrible, terrible thing if it is a woman who does not wish to sell her body for sex, but must to survive. But if you ask me, I can think of a much better way to stop this kind of prostitution - allow women equal rights and then she can get a decent job and support herself.

You may well say there are lots of prostitutes here, and there are. But prostitutes here are not forced into this lifestyle, they choose to, and there is a big difference. And if they choose to, so what? That is their problem then.

The media doesn't force anyone, although you can argue that the media encourages some 'bad' things, it doesn't force you to, nobody is forced to be nude or act any way, that is called freedom, when you are free to act according to your own values.

I can't really understand your point of view about gay people. Gay people are people who prefer intimate relationships with people of the same sex.

I simply don't see a problem with it and don't understand why you think they should be satisfied with hetro relationships, if they are more satisfied with gay ones.

What does Allah do for women? Does Allah loves men than women?

If Allah becomes so much happy then why can't he rain more men for women?
Women also wants happiness as much as men do. And there are also lots of women who can feed more men who can't find jobs. Your logic about men not being sluts can perfectly apply to women. So why call women sluts. Why does your Allah treat men better than women. Are women just no more than tools for men's happiness? Plus, if women go to heaven, then why isn't there any virgin men in heaven? Why only virgin women? I'm sure there's also women who have fetish for virgin men, so why not? Your Allah seems to be unfair to women and most people in the world see that. I mean girls also want as much as what men wants. If it's nature for men, then it's also nature for women. Maybe early in the history of man, women has to choose a responsible man to feed her because work those times was more physical such as hunting. They can't just go pregnant with any men. But this modern age, women can find as much as opportunity as men can. Most works are no longer that physical and some women today can feed their children even without men's help.

To be honest, I'm not also fund of aggressive girls but that is maybe because I am more attracted to innocent girls. But there are also men who likes aggressive or dominant girls. So you can't really force all girls to stay innocent.

LOL...
Two questions are all that is needed here.
1) Is it TRUE that there is now a 'slut' culture different to anything seen before and getting worse?
2) What alternative do Muslim countries offer?

The answer to the first question is almost certainy no. In general young people do not dress more provocatively, act more 'sluttishly' or have very significantly more and earlier sex than would have been the case 10 years, or even 20 years ago. Kids do tend to have sex slightly earlier I think, but not hugely so in most cases and they are certainly better informed about contraception and protection than we were. I know this, having pretty good memories of working with 16-18 yr old kids during 20-odd years.

I remember going out in 1977, dressed in a bin-bag and safety pins, to watch the Buzzcocks. I remember being spat-on most of the evening - it was 'normal' for punk concerts. I don't see much today that is more outrageous amongst teens. I also remember briefly watching a couple of 16yr olds screwing pretty openly in the queue to get in to the concert. I don't think that would be likely to happen today. So, what empirical evidence can we test with?
Here in the UK, for example, teenage pregnancy rates - to take one useful measure - have been falling for over a decade.

Kids certainly have much greater access to any sort of information you can think of - including sexual/pornagraphic 'hard-core' material - but there seems to be no evidence to suggest that this has significantly altered behaviours. Most 16 year olds are pretty much like they have been during my lifetime - slightly awkward, confused, angry, energetic - teenagers in short. They are LESS violent and other changes I HAVE noticed are nearly all equally positive.

For instance - most kids now are MUCH more comfortable with physical contact and much less 'giggly' and silly about it than during my childhood in the 70s. This is largely, I suspect, because the homophobia (and sexism, and racism) that was the norm during my childhood is now almost a thing of the past for most kids.

I watched in fascination, the other day, as one of my students - 17-18yr old lads - playfully sat on the lap of another and completely un-selfconsciously commented on his (the other lad's) haircut in a jokey manner. Had I done that as a kid...wow! unthinkable...the sniggers and cries of 'queer' would have been loud and instant. The teasing and bullying would have followed close behind.
(I should say that neither of these lads are gay or bi (nor am I). They are both strapping lads, as 'normal' as any teenagers ever are. There wasn't a snigger, or even a second glance from the group- not even a hint of any such thought. It was completely un-noteworthy for them. I was, frankly, enraptured by this one simple encounter, and I consider it to be indicative of great progress.) I could relate other stories about a similar lack of skin-colour consciousness I have noticed in many students - not just a lack of racism, but almost a lack of perception of skin colour as anything other than just one more physical characteristic, with no more importance than other characteristics - like height, weight or accent...(Southpark covered it in the 'change the town flag' episode - a bit sentimental but largely accurate in my experience). Now, of course I'm not saying that teens today are all well balanced, non-bigotted paragons of virtue...silly idea....but there has been MAJOR progress.

As for the second question - the only fair answer would be bugger-all IMHO. Most Islamic countries treat women very poorly as a gender, even if not always as individuals. Yes, I know there are many muslim women who are happy to say they like Muslim culture and would not chose to alter. I know that there were many blacks in the US in the 1940-50s who would have said similar things - in both cases I can only judge by MY morality.
