So, Korg and Noritake Itron have apparently teamed up to produce a new vacuum tube technology that is smaller, more reliable and less power hungry than a standard power tube. I came across a Synthtopia article on the collaboration. Apparently the new chip should have acoustic properties/harmonics similar to those of standard vacuum tubes, but the small size, power consumption and heat output would mean they could be installed directly onto circuit boards and used in battery powered devices.
If these work well, with good sound qualities, and they can be produced cheaply it could really change how audio devices are built and change their market availability. Imagine being able to get a tube-like sound in a modern home-audio system!
Of course, the real power will come in their integration into musician targeted amplifiers, effects, and synthesizers. There's a lot that could be done with these
