Testing different paint schemes (Space Marines)

I've been toying with ideas for different paint schemes for Warhammer 40k space marines this week. I find the dark green of the Dark Angels faction kind of disappears on the game table; it's too dark to provide proper contrast against the terrain. So, I'm testing out some different schemes, though I have no plans of repainting my whole army Razz I have a few tactical marines that I primed green a couple months ago, but never got any further on, so I'm playing with those to try some new things. I've done two models so far, to a table top standard (three colours, no highlights or washes)... they have some virtue, but are perhaps a bit too dark still.

I did this on... Wednesday?

The grey and blue work well together, I think, but it looks somewhat bland. I think it could work with some highlighting to catch edges, and washes to darken the recesses... but without much effort, it's ok, but not great.

And I did this one today:

Again, it's a little dark, probably, though the white helm certainly would stand out. I think I like this one a bit better.

I'll have to come up with a few more schemes, with brighter colours, and see how they go.

Thanks, Dean.
I decided to give the second one a quick wash with Nuln Oil, basically a black wash, to add some depth. Some highlighting along the edges would add more depth, but I'd have to do some paint mixing to get a lighter tint of the base colour... which I'm gonna be lazy and not do Wink Washes are basically watered down paints or inks, they have low pigment density and flow readily into crevices.

The result looks pretty decent to me, if a bit sloppy... it's never going to be used to actually play, so it's not a big deal.

WOW - black varnish, and it did exactly what it was supposed to do. Looks so much more authentic.
